scolopax
Yes, dress smartly, a decent check shirt and tie would not be too over the top.

Poacher
right i am going to do somthing i have never done befor try to get permission tho phoning farms. so has any1 got any tips for me to say or do as i have never done it like this befor .thanks lads My advice would be not to bother using the phone, afterall you may only get one decent chance to ask the land owner and its far easier to put a phone down than turn away a friendly well dressed person. joeshaw08
No disrespect to the guys on here, but dont let them put you off. I got my FIRST permission a couple of weeks ago by doing it this way, id previously been round knocking on doors but got nothing. Yes i got a few rejections but now, iv got a 700 acer shoot, with a few fields cleared for FAC a 10 minute drive from the house. So my advice would be - crack on! Just tell them you're looking for abit of pigeon shooting and were wondering if they were having any trouble with there crops. The worst that can happen is they say 'no'. But stick at it mate you might be lucky like me n get a great permission! All the best

I`m more of a face to face type person and not good on the phone which might be why i`ve never had success with it.
anser2
Nothing like doing the rounds of your local farms in person. Pick your time wisely just as the farmer is packing up or at the start of the day and think twice about weekends , a farmer likes time off to. And do not launch into saying how you can do him a favour shooting his pigeons . Get to know him , chat about the weather\ price of wheat or what ever before dropping into the conservation that you are keen on pigeon shooting. If you can name drop another farm where you are already shooting pigeons so much the better even if it as a guest. I might not ask a farmer about pigeon shooting until i can see he has a problem and provided he does not have anyone already shooting the farm or the shooting is under control of a keeper you stand a very good chance of getting your foot in the door. Remember its easy for him to say no if he dosent know you , after you have chatted a few times he is more likely to take a shine to you and its a little harder to say no if the pigeons are hitting his crops ( and his pocket ). I was doing a survey on a farm in Suffolk a few weeks ago that had a bad pigeon problem and after chatting to the farmer about the rights and wrongs of the world he asked me to shoot them !!!! Its 60 miles away from home and too far to travel so i declined his offer even after being offered free shells ( thats not as generious as it sounds as he can claim the cost of shells back on farm expences ) as i have more than enough local shooting . I never , never shoot farms that already has pigeon shooters on them unless asked to by the farmer. Edited April 14, 2008 by anser2
