pavman
On Sunday I ran in Norwich Gundog clubs cold game working test held under kennel club rules. We where in group 1 (ten dogs) group 2 had 9 making 19 dogs in all. I was number 10 and always having to wait on the others to compete before us was a bit frustrating at times! The score system was 20 points each test for either a single or two part retrieve, if you failed at one element of a two part no score was given, and if you failed to retrieve on any test you where effectively out. Test one was two part, a seen bird after gunshot, about 60 yards to my right a gun was fired and a pigeon was thrown out onto Barley, a 2nd shot was fired as she went out in the woods, I sent Astra out over a ditch and through some nettles to retrieve, no help required she picked the bird and came back the same route she went, a few dogs went the long way back to avoid nettles and where marked down. 2nd part was a blind (from the 2nd shot) I was told the area in the woods and this time had to correct her as she drifted with the wind, two corrections and we had the bird safely back but a few points lost! Test 3 was a long blind for a rabbit in rough grass with no shot fired, one dog failed in our group but we did OK, sent her out up wind and as she got about 20 yards from the area she winded it and retrieved with no help, max points Test 4 we changed judges, a gunshot in woods and a bird thrown out about 60 yards over a rise with a dyke in front. This was a difficult one as most dogs assume the bird is in front of the rise as they cant se over it as we do, many had problems and I had to push Astra back to get her on the scent once over the dyke and rise she made quick work of finding the bird and came straight in to hand, two dogs dropped the bird to shake water off when out the dyke which failed them so 3 had already been eliminated. Test 5 was a two part, a seen bird after gunshot to my left at about 70 yards and as the dog ran out a second shot with a bird thrown onto water (a small pond again over a rise) in front about 60 yards out. She needed one pip and a left for the 1st but no problems with the 2nd and many had a lots of difficultly with this one so we picked up valuable points. We then had lunch and the cut off was 90 points from 120 only 8 dogs got through Test 7 was a cracker, a walk to heel off the lead with gun shot and the judge said a rabbit has been shot it may have run off! I was told the area and sent her out she picked up a dragline scent (rabbit dragged through woods) and tracked it to the retrieve about 60 yards into the woods max points. Two dogs failed we are down to 6! Test 8, we lined out for a walk up and clays came over the hedge shot by the guns, then birds where thrown over, 3 dogs ran in now we are just 3 Last test a long blind 100 yards with no shot fired into woods over some rough and a small rise. I needed to work a bit but we got the bird. In the end we managed 2nd place and I was very pleased to come behind a full time trainer. All the help NTTF has given over the last 3 years bore fruit on the day and we came very close to graduating to open standard,,,,theres always the next one. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2296/ngc2fl2.jpg http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4442/ngclq4.jpg Edited May 6, 2008 by pavman

Just shows what hard work and dedication can do. TC Edited to add; The list of tasks that you have given will give a lot of people an insight into what is needed to get their dogs to a standard to compete in working tests.
