tomtom
Hello folks, I would like to tap your collective ferreting knowledge. Are ferrets only ever used under nets or can you just used them to flush and then shoot over them? I quite fancy ferreting, but I don't really want to mess about with nets. tomtom
Thanks for the answer mate, I have always wanted a Ferret, its good to know I would be able to use it to hunt too as I don't think I would ever get in to netting. This might be a bit of a daft question but bear with me, I know nothing on the subject. Can you actually train them? What makes them come back to you after you release them in the field, can they be trained to any extent? Cheers for your time!

bob300w
If you have a market for them, buyers will probably prefer them clean killed, i.e. netted. If you want some of the most enjoyable shooting that you will have, just use netting to stop them escaping down ditches etc., and shoot them. By the way, don't think of starting using ferrets until rabbits have finished breeding, i.e. in cold weather, or you will get continual lay-ups whilst your ferret kills and eats young rabbits. Ferret Master
Don't forget to buy a ferret finder as well. It will help avoid losing your ferret and can help put extra rabbits in the bag! FM

Cranfield
You should be aware that when shooting rabbits bolted by ferrets, you can get a few extra lay-ups, as the gun noise and general disturbance will often inhibit the rabbits from bolting. The comments about netted rabbits selling better than shot ones is very true, many outlets won't even take shot rabbits.
mossy835
all i ever do is shoot over ferrets, my butcher will give £1 for shot or netted rabbits.
ferretman
i have to admitt the butcher gives me 20 p less for shot rabbiits so not that much loss. and you may get lay ups and yuo may not it wot happens on the day.all the best.
Guest cookoff013
i`ve shot over ferrets. we just waited and shot only bolting rabbits. any rabbit playing `peek-a-boo` we left to bolt later. they eventually all do (especially with 5 ferrets up its ****) nice and safe no chance of hitting a ferret, and 3 shooters should easily get 50 or so strikes. the 3 we had were one main shooter, one to cover when reloading. and another at a profile shot. the others were 5-10% off the rabbit bank ! That made me laugh Until you have eaten a netted ferret, don't knock it. Thanks for pointing that out and I have been back and edited the original post.
