A fitting end to the evening.

Received a call from friend asking me if he could join me on a trip our on some rabbits. Keen to introduce someone new to shooting I obliged and arranged a trip out to a local golf course and small holding. We met up 19:30 and went over safe gun handling and control and getting him used to the rifle(Quad HMR). After checking his aim with a few inanimate targets, we set off to find some rabbits.

During the course of the evening and having walked around the 50 odd acres of course and small holding we were struggling to find much in the way of targets. Dusk settled and we returned to the car to fit the lamp and off we set to a small paddock area, not far from the chickens with an adjacent field home to quite a few young lambs. It wasn't long before we realised why the rabbits had been quiet, I shone the lamp round and picked up a pair of eyes sat behind the paddock fence at 150 yards.

We laid up and I started calling, with the fox pricking his head up but not really that interested. The eyes disappeared and 5 mins went before I tracked the fence line along towards the adjacent field. Gave another squeak followed by the lamp and sure enough, we picked him up trying to work his way round us. We played a game of hide and seek with the lamp for a few minutes before the Fox disappeared behind a tree to hide from the lamp. I hadn't got a clear shot at this point and decided to walk it in. Using a line of trees a carefully made my way to within about 50 yards of the Fox and sure enough, he was there foraging for food. I took up position using a tree as cover and carefully brought the lamp on him. Gave a squeak but couldn't get him to keep still long enough to take a good shot. Squeaked again and finally the shot presented itself. The dog dropped like a brick with a clean shot right between the eyes. The Fox was a sizable male in good condition.

A fitting end to the night with a few Rabbits in the bag for my mate and the chickens and lambs safe from another Fox for me.

have you hooked another one into the world of shooting then ??

We had a good chat afterwards, he was very open about the evening and certainly showed maturity towards the emotions he had experienced and his new understanding of country pursuits. He has asked to go again to which I will oblige. I am not sure he will take it up anytime soon, but he is now almost definitely pro shooting whereas as before he was on the fence. I know he enjoyed it, yet another thank you arrived in my in-box this morning. :good:

Thanks guys. :good:

Birdboy, its a Deben Max Pro and yes I would recommend it to anyone wanting a good all round rifle lamp. Its light weight and casts a good beam, and with the standard battery pack lasts a nights lamping. Of course there are others such as the lightforce lamps which are also well worth a look. The 170 is a better lamp but is much larger as well.

AXE,

i notice the sunshade on the scope are you getting glare off the lamp and dont you think it will gather

less light on a night?

Unfortunately, I get a nuisance glare back from the Sak Moderator. Fitting the sunshade, was a quick and simple fix to the problem at an early stage. I simply haven't tried anything else and I don't think it is that detrimental to night shooting. The only time I look through the scope at night is when I have the lamp on the target ready to take the shot, so not a problem at all.
