Paul,

I bought a Leupold from the states, the customs and handling charge was about £40, so I ended up saving about £100.

It got from the US to the "international hub" in the UK in less than a week. I then got the bill from Parcel Force which I paid the same day. Parcel force then lost it for nearly two months!! When they found it they tried to charge me again.

I ended up very happy with the scope, but very annoyed with Parcel Force. Not sure I would bother again.

I've bought two scopes from USA Ebay. One came as a gift with no import duties, 'tother was declared at US Ebay Dollar price and got charged for. Both were sent via USPS which then gets delivered by Royal Mail.

I'n not knocking UK dealers - it's not their fault that UK is such an expensive place to live and do business in. Equally it's not the fault of US dealers that the World Wide Warket place is now only a keyboard away. :good:

Only a few weeks ago I bought a leupold scope from the states via ebay, it arrived in the UK 2 weeks after order and I had it the next day delivered by UPS.

It was marked up as a gift and $30 value. No UPS fee or import duty. A friend ordered 3 days after I did and got exactly the same treatment, very pleased with the service and saved a good few pennies...

Having bought some Bushnell binoculars on e bay at a saving of £100 and then realising they were very good copies I am now reluctant to go for one of those leupolds your on about ..........Tempted though :good:

Not alot of US companies will take the risk and the ones that do (To get your business)don't always leaving you with a import tax bill so like some of the replies here i would go on recommendations where suppliers are concerned

You pay your money and take your chances technically its an offence for people to mark it up as a gift or declare the incorrect value on it but in practice everyone does it. You will usually be ok but customs don't have to use the declared value if they believe its a lie and can just impose their own value on it. So if you have a fair saving to play with its worth taking a punt on. The only issue you may have is were it to go missing in transit with a declared value of $60 guess what the transport company will pay out
