dunganick
I dont shoot at the large grounds much anymore, however i still try to attend a local shoot, its hardly got mr digweed at it, however we have a few fair shots, one is an ex uk DTL champ. Its only a 30 birder however tends to be very competitive and challenging setups add to the interest. To the point, last weekend i ended up in a 2 way shoot off (of the clay shooting type before you start mungler) It took 24 birds to divide us, glad to say i won eventually. Now apparently its considered an advantage to go first in shoot offs, however in the half a dozen or so ive done ive always shot last by choice, so as to watch the first guy. What are your techniques and can anyone explain why (besides talking yourself out of it if you follow) that you should shoot first. Catamong
It's usually better to shoot first, to put a bit of pressure on your opponent, that's the way that most top shots see it. At the type of local shoot you describe, it's also courteous to speak to your opponent before the shoot off and offer to split the pot 50/50, that way you're both only shooting for whatever trophy is up for grabs. dunganick
we dont shoot for money at this shoot, its a tight nit club, just do a range of handicap shoots some inter club ones. I find the pressure if going first more concerning and would rather watch their shooting and have something to work towards. Everyone at the club thinks im mad. Maybe i am thanks cat

Cat. spot on Cat, i must admitto wanting to go first and get it done, waiting to see the other guy lead is not my choice, the only pressure i want is my own ability to shoot well, if i'm beat, hats off handshakes and congrats first, weep later well done on your win Nick, i recall the first shootoff i had, i was terified, that was until it was over and the other guy said the same, kinda took the pressure off. Martin. Nick, as to the techniques used, i was once at a ATA shootoff, the two guys in question were called up to start, one brought a flat of shells with him (250), when the second guy got to the stand the first guy said "you arent planning to stay then" the second promtly missed the first bird. beretta
it depends on what the targets are to me. if its a nasty simultanious pair and i shot first, i have got to go for every one. if i went second and the other guy had hit them all, ill have to hit them all too. but if he didnt, i could pick off the easier ones. like cat says, you would normally split first. i can remember 1 shootoff at a game fair poolshoot. i had had a very good year on the circuit and was to shoot off with a lad of about 12. he was standing with his parents actually shaking in his shoes poor lad. i offered to split and he did. he was over the moon. just hope he remembers if i come across him again 1 day
Bagsy
I was meant to have a shoot off on Sunday - got scared and ran away, problem solved!
Emmsy
depends on the targets, if its a new stand of hard targets i would rater let someone go first so i can get an idea of what im chasing. if its easier stuff it usually pays to get on first and see if you can add some pressure. BlaserF3
If I know that I can beat you and you know that I can makes it easy for me. But the situation can be reversed. Be polite and if you win try to be modest about it.
dunganick
Well we were both pretty even ability shots. The stand was one we had shot before, albeit they moved the shooting poistion back and to one side, actually making it an easier bird as it transpired. The following 3 sudden death rounds were shot after that at increasingly long distance. Normally i hate shoot offs however i enjoyed this one, nice not to be playing catch up finally. Peter De La Mare
How do you get to choose if you go first or second? What happens if you both insist on going second/First? Is there a method of selection like the one with the prettiest gun goes first? ....or the one whose lady friend has the biggest tits? Would work for me every time, problem is with a couple of decent norks putting me off I wouldn't see the clays yet alone hit them!
