Garry Spencer
Hi, I am very new to this, so am asking for some help and advice. I live in France, I only go to the ball trap, however, the Frence love to go pigeon shooting and I am trying to get a small business of the ground, to bring them over to the uk, also, maybe during the hunting season in France, visa versa. Any advise on this would be very helpful, I can arrange anything in Northern France including having a minibus, but need help arranging things in the UK, Southern England would be best. Many thanks, Garry

bob300w
I can only relate what happened in this area around 15 years ago. A Danish lad, who lived over here at the time, had the same idea. He brought over Danish shooters for pigeon shooting, and he paid local farmers for the pigeon shooting rights. The farmers took the money quite happily and kicked off all of the local lads, some of who had shot on the land all of their lives. The Danes, although great company in the pubs in the evenings, shot everything that flew, ran, walked, crawled, or swam. The locals who had lost their shooting, took their dogs for walks more regularly than usual, and not surprisingly, past the pigeon shooters hides. Ropes of crow-scaring bangers appeared magically overnight in strategic places, scarecrows migrated en masse, close to hides near boundaries. Carrier bags and shiny objects blew across the country-side and caught in trees on pigeon flight lines. Numerous other events that cannot be printed, to protect the guilty, also occurred regularly. :yp: It eventually dawned on the farmers, that when it came to the harvest and the game rearing season, that all of the lads who had helped them out in the past were far too busy to lend a hand do any pest control, ferreting, or, and this hit them the hardest, to do any beating. After two seasons, all of the farmers, without exception, declined the money offered and went back to local shooters as previous. Since then the status quo has been restored, along with the tranquility of the country-side. No idea where you intend obtaining your shooting, but I can guarantee that farmers in this area will not participate in the scheme. Best of luck. dustyfox
I think there maybe a few on here that wont like this as they may lose their permission which most likely they get for free. If a farmer knows people a going to pay for pigeon shooting that person may well lose his permission. Although pigeon shooting is sporting the main reason is for pest control crop protection. And How much are you going to charge for a days pigeon shooting? Df
harpo_the_bad
The estate that I shoot on has lost over half of its beaters by giving the cockshoots in particular, to friends and family of the management rather than the beaters. I'm sure it didn't help that the management and their friends were Germans. There were a lot of miffed beaters when they found out that the last scheduled DRIVEN shoot was to get rid of the cock birds usually given to the beaters! I'd have to agree with Bob and Dusty on this one. Your plan may not make you the most popular man in the world!

It's slightly off topic, but generally the whole point of being a beater, is to have the cock's day and a ****-take with your beating mates at the end of the season. Nobody goes beating for the money that's for sure, up to seven hours hard work for £10-15? Yeah, right, You can get more than that working in McD's, in the warm, dry, and all the beef flavoured garbage that you can eat. Not surprised that your beaters are miffed, find another shoot to beat on would be my response.

Well... many of the beaters did do exactly that! The estate is under new management now. It sold to an Englishman who is big on shooting and conservation a few years ago. It's not been as bad since the change, but many good people never came back...

I was trying to point out the problems that both you and I know are going to occur, and have occurred previously, in my area. My shooting is safe from any threat such as this, and as I said, local farmers have been caught before and they do have long memories! Cranfield
The suggestion to contact Will Beasley at UKShootwarehouse (link at the top of most pages), is a good one. Obviously, you will not get too much helpful advice from pigeon shooters on here. who may be concerned about the possibility of losing their shooting to fee paying visitors. However, any UK shooters with a lot of permissions , may be interested in the "swapping" opportunities.
2shots
Wouldnt be me swapping shooting with anyone, weve lost our shoots recently to people from abroad with lots more money than our syndicate could come up with, and thats with farmers that you consider as friends after a lot of years of helping them, our pheasants dont exist this year and I hope they choke on thiers. Beware of any offers like this, I now know other lads that are losing land all over the borders/jedburgh area to them, companies that pay by the year up front,We bumped into a minibus full (16 )last month that came off the ferry at north shields, and they were paying 125 euro each a day for pigeon shooting on a farm where the guy used to ring us to go ,they thought that this was extremely cheap.BEWARE . Jimbo57
I don't know how things stand down south in England but in Scotland pigeon and goose guides really are regarded as the scum of the earth. They don't necesserily do anything illegal but they deprive local men of shooting that they have built up over decades of providing a good service to farmers just because they wave a few £20 notes about. You can't blame the farmers but the guides are hated and despised by honest shooting men. Take my advice matey - don't do it. Jim
