pigeon shooting today

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Well don is laid up in his sick bed today, a supposed trapped sciatic nerve but just too lazy to get off the sofa if you ask me so just YTS and myself out today.

We spent a little time earlier in the week watching a field that had alot of wind damaged laid barley and some pigeons diving into it. We spotted a likely place for a hide and today we arrived to have a go at 'em before the farmer gets twitchy about the amount of birds visiting the fields.

Chris and i arrived at 1000hrs and soon had the hide set up , agreed to shoot in turns and some shell deeks on top of the laid barley. Extreme care is needed today to do farther harm to the crops so walking up and down the tractor lines only and minimum of dog work with a spaniel rather than my labrador to try to retrieve the slain.

The birds soon started to arrive and we were into them with a succesion of singletons that we dealt with with mixed success. where your humble scribe hit 5 in a row and was suitably smug :sly: poor YTS was missing over the top as the birds hovered over the decoys.... i also noticed has wasn't getting his weight over his front foot further compunding the problem so after he missed a couple more and was getting distinctly dejected i told him where he was going wrong and what do you know on his next shot a big cloud of feathers and a pigeon tumbles to earth. Well after all i am a complete gentleman in the field!!!! Oh alright i suppose the constant barracking i was giving him may also have had an effect :hmm: it was almost as much fun as the shooting

As the morning wore on the birds started to arrive every 15 mins or so in gangs of 2-5 and we cut out a singleton most times but with the farmhouse close enough to be careful of spent shot alot of opportunities were lost as we left the birds that could have caused problems with our strict safe line of fire. And then it happened........ A bird came pitching in from in front of yts and curled left at 30yds.....YTS killed it dead in the air...... at the shot a bird we hadn't seen arrive lifted from the decoys and at 35yds he knocked that down too. As the feathers drifted on the wind and YTS sat down with a smug grin on his chops i must admit it was as good a right and left as i have seen from him. And the only right and left of the day... oh good grief i am not going to hear the end of this.

As our finish time of 2pm approached i knocked down 3 right to left crossers in succesion at 30yds and chris added to the bag too at ranges from 10yds(splat) to 35yds. We ran the spaniel through and picked the 21 with faithful labrador assisting where she could. An excellent few hours out in good company.

Hope don is feeling better by the weekend as we will be out again but thats it for now, thanks for reading.
