GBS
Managed to get down to the river for a couple of hours last night. Weights were: Grayling 2lb 1oz Brown trout 2lb 2oz Brown trout 1lb 2oz And of the three it was the little brownie that fought the hardest. Looking at the condition of the tail fins it seems the little one was a wild fish and the larger one most probably stocked. Anyone a good recipe for grayling? vole
Great fishing and well done. What flies? Pan frying is good especially if you fry strips of smokes bacon in the oil and some garlic before adding the fish which has been dipped in seasoned flour.A splash of Balsamic vinegar makes the bacon/garlicky oil a nice sauce. GBS
All three to a small hares ear nymph. I did lose another fish that took a grey wulff off the surface - must remember to check my knots more reguarly! Cheers for the recipe ideas. We are making fish cakes out of one and the grayling is in the freezer for another day. g

Dunkield
Times change, they are now sought after by some, people fly half way round the world for good grayling fishing. As soon as something acquires a value, it changes it's status.
GBS
Yes, they are slightly unloved. Each day I have on the river the bag limit is 2 trout but as many grayling as you like. We are encouraged to "remove" as many grayling from the river as possible and they are not supposed to be put back. Trout Fishcakes last night were superb by the way!! But definately none tastier than a Brown Would you do me a favour and post a picture of a small hares ear nymph, I am not sure if I am familar with it , and this is the second time this week it has been mentioned. Country_est
Years since I did fishing like that, but from what I can remember is, Descale the grayling and pan fried as per trout, or grilled with a bit of butter and some herbs in the belly cavity. Once scaled I tened to use the same recipes as for trout. But one I liked best for the tout was bit of butter, some prawns & herbs in the belly, covered in tin foil and then done in the oven for a few mins then served with a cream and alomond sauce.
