Afternoon all, Im after a decent eel this summer (or what summer we might have left anyway!) and just wondering if anyone knows a water that might throw up an eel or two? Not after anyones secret waters, but an idea of where to start would be a massive help. Im in Welwyn garden area but happy to do a bit of driving for the right spot, any ideas? Cheers in advance

Sometimes big lakes/pits near the sea, or a tidal river are the best places.

There are quite a few between Rye and Hythe in Kent that hold big eels, but they are all controlled by Angling Clubs who don't issue day tickets.

I would guess there are quite a few in Essex.

We caught some big ones out of Hanningfield Reservoir about 30 years ago, but thats all trout fishing now, I think ( but the eels will still be there and it is a very big place).

We also fished some lakes near Waltham Forest and had large eels while deadbaiting for pike, but I can't remember what the lakes are called and it was a long time ago.

I would telephone around the Tackle Shops in chosen areas and ask them, they will know and have day ticket information etc.

Now that most waters are commercial, or trying to attract Club members, they openly publicise what the potential catches are.

There are very few secret places, although I do know a few. :good:

Cheers, Ive tried the local tackle shops round here, but as soon as you mention eels you can see it in their eyes, their thinking 'Nutter' :good: ! Also tried the NAC, not a lot of help! Hanningfords been mentioned to me before, A spot of 'guesting' might be called for  ! It seems that everyone who knows of decent eels keeps information very close to their chests, understandable but a bit frustrating non the less.

I was Visiting Relatives in the midlands over the weekend and ducked out to the local tackle shop for a chat and hes given me a few places to start round Worcester, mainly canals. So I might resign myself to a few more trips to visit familly in the day and spending the night on the bank! Its either that or a few trips to the thames for a chuck it and hope sessions, never know might bump int a cat while im at it. Thanks again :hmm:

Good luck with your quest Charlie Brown. I can't buy Eels for love nor money due to the disease that's affecting them :)
