Lloyd90
Remington 700 ? With mods it could be a very nice rifle If you want one that you dont really have to mod and can just be out of the box brilliance I hear good things about the steyr scout ? steve_b_wales
I've got a Tikka T3 Lite in .308. It's a great rifle for stalking plus it's good for targets. Very accurate and reliable.
Baldrick
The Ruger Mk77 Mk2 VT would be on my list of .308s to consider. Laminated stock, stainless varmint-profile barrel, and it looks and shoots superbly. It is a heavy gun, but it will be a better target rifle than a Tikka (speaking as a Tikka owner). Harnser
If you are thinking target and stalking then you would need a heavy barrel stalking rifle so that it would cope with the extra use down the range . I use a very light barrel ruger m77 .308 for stalking .Although a very accurate rifle it tends to get very hot after 4 or 5 quick shots and would then suffer on the accuracy side . Harnser . Baldrick
But they cool quickly, Harnser. On a hot summer's day, having to wait for a 1"-thick barrel to cool, bores me senseless. Even though I am young and fit, I still question why I lug a 13lb rifle around the woods and field when I could have a lighter gun. Tony, maybe you want to thing about the ratio of stalking: paper punching you'll be doing, and what weight of gun/barrel you'll need? Harnser
Baldrick ,like you i loved heavy barrel rifles and used to lug one around for years . As you get wiser and older you learn that a light weight scout rifle will do the same job on a deer as a heavy weight rifle . Besides a scout rifle points quicker and come up quicker .Having said that I still like the look of a heavy stainless rifle . Harnser . Baldrick
How low do you go with rifle weight though? Recoil with the .308 can't be overlooked, and in an unmodded 6lb rifle it is quite noticeable.
Harnser
I wouldnt want to shoot my light weight all day long .But for deer out in the field it is as best (in my opinion) as it gets . How many shots do you get off at deer in any one stalk , and any how i am a big old boy and can soak up recoil . Al though i have had to move to a beretta self loader for pigeon shooting as an old injury is playing up . Harnser .

Smooth action and very little recoil.

I had a friend who aquired one unissued and was a fabulous rifle . Harnser .
njc110381
How much stalking will you be doing? And also how many rounds do you plan to shoot at targets? I find my Tikka T3 6.5x55 a great field gun, but it gets warm after five rounds at the range and needs a short break. At the same time, my CZ Varmint .223 is great at the range but weighs a ton in the field. I'd rather have a light gun than a heavy one if stalking a lot, and a light profile barrel cools quite quickly Keep in mind that you need to take a steady shot after a long stalk. Being tired isn't going to help accuracy at all.
njc110381
I found this one on guntrader, could be what you're looking for... http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/Det...l+41&Filter[NewType][]=Rifle&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Bolt%20Action&Filter[Calibre][]=.22%20LR&Filter[Calibre][]=.308&Filter[Calibre][]=.308%20WIN&Filter[AddrCounty][]=Cambridgeshire Steyr are good guns, and I'm pretty sure the SSG is a target spec rifle. This one doesn't have too heavy a barrel though.
MC
As it has already been said a heavy barrel takes longer to cool down but they also take longer to heat up. I put 60 rounds through mine yesterday and apart froma nightmare @1000 yards accuracy didn't suffer at all. Although it did cost about 4 times your budget and is a dedicated target rifle, It does have a scope rail though.
