JR1960
Been offered the above, never used a spaniel or collie, (I'm a Labrador man) waddaya reckon for a retriever/hide dog? Sems reasonably quiet, ie not scatterbrained running about everywhere but not had a chance to see what she's like outside, just wondered if anyone had used a cross or had any thoughts as to whether she'd be suitable. Sundodger
If I was you I would leave it. I have a cross breed dog and she was a nightmare to train. she is getting on in age know and still a pain in the ****. I have just got myself a spring spaniel puppy, a pure pleasure to have and train. Sundodger

JR1960
Cheers guys, pretty much what I thought , hence the question. Had a collie X lab years ago, the bloody thing was mental, it used to do circuits of the room like a wall of death rider! We used to take it out for runs on the beach for 8 hours and the damn thing was still as bouncy when we got home as it was when it went out. rimfire4969
I've got a springer for my shooting and a border for my family and animals. Both are great dogs at their jobs, but a cross, i think would not be one or the other and a hell of a dog to train, it would not know wether to pick it up or round it up. Its only when you have a dog thats ment for a job you can see it in them from an early age. A lab will bring you things, a springer will go push through every bush, a boarder will try to round up. I know there are people who have different dogs doing different jobs, but i don't think it happens that often, you only hear of the ones that make it not the ones who don't
shootingmike
It's also maybe worth mentioning that a lot of collies are absolutely terrified by loud noises (such as gunshot). A friend has two and one of his has chewed through a metal crate before whilst fireworks were going off!
fortune
It never ceases to amaze me how this aversion to cross breeds came about. Surely the breed standards are one of the most destructive things that we, the human race are doing to the species that we love the most. If you look at a modern dogs pedigree and go back about eight generations you will see that overall the same names keep popping up. Most of the pedigree dogs are now suffering with genetic abnormalities that we are INBREEEDING into them. It is wrong to write off this dog just because is a cross. I had a lab x collie and it was one of the best gundogs that one could have. Dogs are just like people and everyone is different. This dog may well have the retriever instincts of the lab and the brains of the collie. Ok you aren’t ever going to win a prize at Crufts but so what. How old is it and why is it being offered?
