Topgunners
Saturday, I went out on for a recce on some new deer shooting permission and then set off round my farms looking for Pigeons. Scarce to say the least. One or two Big flocks flying about but not settling anywhere in particular; or for very long. I drove round till mid afternoon and finally found a large flock hidden away on top of a hill on some wheat stubble. I set up. with the wind coming left to right across the hide and in that bitter wind I ended up with 31 hard earnt birds. Sunday, I took my mate Clive off down to Glos. to visit some farms I had not been to for a month or so. 1.to get my Permission letters updated . 2 to see if another county had any birds about. I had a good chat with the Farmers and got my letters sorted with ALL vermin, Game agreed (including the Roe Deer and Foxes). We then drove round all 1,200 acres and only 1 large flock of pigeons , flitting about from trees to trees but not settling anywhere. On the last field we went to I am very slowly inching down a VERY STEEP slope and there were 3 deer, just sitting in the hedgerow about 80 yards away. Sod's Law!!! hope they are still there or abouts, when I get my .243. Upon turning the Jeep round I then tried to climb the slope back to the main road. HAH!!! It was that wet and muddy the jeep got stuck fast. Reversed back down and tried 3 more times to no avail. Thought I might have to ring the farmer and then decided to give it a good long fast run and try and drop the nearside wheels in tight to the fence as i could. Almost at the top and now crawling very slowly we just made it to the ridge and who is sitting there in his Defender watching. It's the farmer with a great big smile on his fizzhog!!!!!!! He then started to have a fit of laughter as he shouted out " I didn't think you were gonna make that". I said " nor me. I was just going to give you a ring" He said he was going to dig out a culvert and would now WALK down and not chance the Defender.  Ha. some feeble excuse about wrong tyres fitted on that vehicle. We said our goodbyes and then proceeded to drive round ALL day, back up into Warks etc to no avail and finally decided to call it a day and got back at 5.0pm. Never mind Another day. Cranfield
It sounds as though the pigeons not being committed to anything in particular at the moment, is pretty general. We need some cold weather to focus their minds. Farmers seem to have a funny sense of humour, I had to dig a Subaru Legacy out of wet stubbles once, on my own in the pouring rain. When I got to the Farm yard, covered in mud and soaked through, I met the Farmer and told him what had happened. He said that he had been watching me and if I had still been there when the rain stopped, he would have brought a tractor down and pulled me out. He never did explain why he didn't want to get the tractor wet.
Whitebridges
Laugh. A breed on there own. One I know loves the spring tides. All the chelsea on sea brigade park in the usual place, when they are stuck and begging he tows them off at £60 a piece. His lads wash the salt off for fifty quid. Pedro
I went up to Sutton Coldfield on Saturday for a shindig and on the way up the M1 saw a field covered in pigeons and crows/rooks> It was around the Dunstable or Luton area I think, on the left as you go up. It was a stubble field in front of a wood. On the way back down on Sunday they were still there - a huge flock, I've never seen anything like it, must have been getting on for a thousand. I reckon that's were all the Essex one's have gone, 'cos there's naff all round here at the mo P.
