Now do i send it back or hang on till the end of january?

I'd tell them they can have it back when the new one is valid. If they get funny with you just say that although they may be ok with it, the force next door may not be and you'd rather be 100% legal. It's no issue to them whether they have it now or later.

Strathclyde police covers a big space.

It's not that important either way - the certificate remains valid until it expires, whether you actually have it physically in your possession or not. As it states on the certificate, it actually remains the property of the Chief Constable at all times, so technically he could ask for it at any point, although he has no real reason to do so until it expires, as he is doing now.

The only situation where you would actually need to have it in your possession would be if you needed to buy cartridges during what is left of it and you were buying from a dealer who doesn't know you. Even then, I suspect that showing him the new one would be fine.

There is no problem in the law with returning it by post, but it might be safer to either hand it in or send it recorded delivery to protect yourself in case it doesn't arrive at Pitt Street safely.

Hope that helps.
