MC
Speak to your FEO but I would hang on to it as it hasn't yet run out and you new one is not yet valid.

Greenhunter
I'd check with your FEO. Changed mine to co-terminus recntly, old one ran out two weeks before new one arrived! i was straight on the phone only to be told it was ok and I was still legal! Had visions of having my guns removed and having to get them back I don't know when!
steveb
Just of the phone to the FEO and they say it's fine, but think i will take a photo blow it up and print to be on the safe side. Before people say just photocopy it when you do that the water mark comes up with FRAUD across it, don't want to take a chance.
njc110381
I'd tell them they can have it back when the new one is valid. If they get funny with you just say that although they may be ok with it, the force next door may not be and you'd rather be 100% legal. It's no issue to them whether they have it now or later. steveb
Looking at the posts might just keep a hold of it, the syndicate i shoot with is in stirling and i have another permission in aberdeenshire, better to be legal than not
IanClark
It's not that important either way - the certificate remains valid until it expires, whether you actually have it physically in your possession or not. As it states on the certificate, it actually remains the property of the Chief Constable at all times, so technically he could ask for it at any point, although he has no real reason to do so until it expires, as he is doing now. The only situation where you would actually need to have it in your possession would be if you needed to buy cartridges during what is left of it and you were buying from a dealer who doesn't know you. Even then, I suspect that showing him the new one would be fine. There is no problem in the law with returning it by post, but it might be safer to either hand it in or send it recorded delivery to protect yourself in case it doesn't arrive at Pitt Street safely. Hope that helps.
landrover
when i renewed mine, i sent the old one back when the new one arrived,a week later the old one came back with a note saying not to return it till it had run out as the new one was not valid until the old one expired :
