Today P-A-S took me decoying for the fist time with me shottie **yahoo** . We set 2 hides up on the edge of the field, decoys and my 2 pecking pigeons in front of me and the deeks and a twirly in front of him. the pecking pigeons did ****** all, p-a-s had a good first couple of hours with the twirly, then we swapped hides so i could have a bash at some flying vermin, As i had only managed to let 1 shot off up to that point 'What a good sport he is!!' I haven't enjoyed myself that much for a long time!, i really do need to shoot skeet more at the clay ground to learn leads as i missed loads of shots, But!! i did manage 2 down 2 pigeons **yahoo** which made the day all worth it,, those rotating pigeons are ace!! I'm puttin 1 of those on santa's crimbo list along with a hide.haha A hit ratio of 22 to 1 isn't good i know, but i was just so chuffed at taking the shots at vermin instead of clays, P-A-S is a top bloke & really friendly he gave me lots of good advise on tips

P-A-S :hmm::P:P

Richie,

Glad you had a good day, I presume it was Wood Pigeon you were shooting and not ferals?

If so, most Sportsmen who really know about shooting Wood Pigeons don't refer to them as "rats" or "vermin", that puts them alongside Cockroaches and other low life species, and that's simply not fair, as they are a very noble bird.

I wouldn't lose much sleep if rats and cockroaches were eradicated from this country, but I can't say the same about Wood Pigeons, I'm afraid.

Cat.

I'd like to add to Catamong's comments. The woodpigeon is can do untold damage to crops. At this time they need to be controlled. It deserves respect as it is a very sporting and challenging bird. It is most definately not a "fling (flying?) rat". Educate yourself on the countryside.

Richie 76 ,

I am glad that you enjoyed yourself on your first days pigeon shooting . Dont be worrying about how many birds you killed ,all missed birds are classed as oppotunitys in my book and you will do well to reminisce on your missed birds as well as your kills . I to hate to hear the wonderful woody refered to as a flying rat . After 50 years of shooting all game birds and deer stalking ,the humble woody in my opinion is the only quarry that is worth pursuing . Well done on your first days pigeon shooting . Harnser .

Thanks for the offer FM :hmm: , I'll send you a PM and we'll sort something out, I'm really interested in all aspect of hunting and shooting and would very much appreciate you showing me good field craft and hunting techniques

I've done a fair bit of reminiscing Harnser on the day. trying to work out why I wasn't hitting them. I think my main problem was in all the excitement i found myself aiming at the bird rather than in front where its going to be, the 2 i shot took a lot of self control to aim in front of the bird.but it paid off I'm pleased to say and bagged my first ever 2 woodies, Even tho i was missing the shots it was really good being out in the field doing something that i really wanted to do and was enjoying doing, the first bird i shot made it all worth while, the smile on my face said it all :lol:
