nickwrxstiv2
I've just recently acquired my SGC. I've only just bought a 12g Lanber Field Deluxe which I love. did a few clays today! When is the best time to go out and get the woodies? On my way back from clays I thought I'd pop into the fileds where I have permission to shoot. It was around 12:30 this afternoon. there was absolutely nothing in the skyd apart from a few sea guls and a Kestrel! When should I go out? Cranfield
The easy answer is, "when the birds are there". Keep an eye on your fields (assuming they have a crop in them that attracts pigeons) and see when the pigeons are feeding there. In my area they are on the rape (weather permitting) by 7.30am and then come and go all day until about 3pm.
mikee
the best time to shoot woodies is at the time they are heading to your land, if you can go out and recce at different times of day and see if any come in and where they come from and when they arrive you will build up a better picture of pigeon movement, this time of year i try to be in my hide before dawn, at other times of year the best time may be after tea. mikee
Imperfection
Im finding early afternoon onwards is best round here.Didnt get a sausage this morning, but got 16 in quick succession in afternoon plus couple of crows after i shifted location to near some powerlines and scrub. nickwrxstiv2
Do woodies tend to go out and feed when dawn breaks? At the minute I've got nothing else apart from my shottie. I've got no decoys or hide materials at all. Am I on to a loser? What should I purchase? Where's the cheapest place? Thanks!
Cranfield
Do a "Search", or flip through the "Pigeon Shooting Equipment" section, there are lots of "what do I need to start" type threads on there. Its my experience that pigeons like to feed at first light, weather permitting.
mikee
with only a gun the best time to get any pigeons will probably be mid to late afternoon as the birds come to roost, if you dont have any access to woods get some deeks and nets asap mikee
buckfast d
a few good deeks mate and camo gear topped by a face mask and sit/stand tight. but there is no point setting up in your permission if the pigeons aren't feeding there
nickwrxstiv2
There is a flight line straight across one of the fields leading to a rootery where they roost. I wonder if the Kestrel was stopping the woodies coming in? Thanks for the info re other forum, I'll look now!
anser2
What the hell is a rootery ? and no , the kestrel will not affect your pigeons.

nickwrxstiv2
Cheers! I'm a newbie at this so I've got a few questions - 1.) Where do you set out your 'V' pattern of decoys? Do you have to stand on the crops and do it at the edge of the field? 2.) I know my farmer has got rape but how can I identify it? The fields are just starting to sprout. I'd ask the farmer but he's not really a peoples person! Thanks
