Evil Elvis
Was out vermin shooting with bionicle early this am. On one of our shoots they have just installed a galvanised steel fence along the railway line. They left several squares of metal lying around, approx 4-5mm thick, I casually commented that I wondered what sort of damage a hmr round would do. So we stood one up with a very good back stop and stepped back approx 20-25 yards. My first round went straight through which suprised us both!!! Then Bionicle shot next to it and the bullet just shattered and left a tiny dent. Must have been a fluke. So I shot it again, and again it went straight through and again bionicles didnt!!! His third shot didnt either............... We then shot a cm thick peice. miine made a significany dent in it, bionicles dented it but no-where near as deep. Heres the weird part, We have the same gun, cz silouhettes. we used the same ammo, remington magnums. The ONLY difference is mine has a 20" barrel his has a 16" which we understand loses about 300fps compared to the 20" barrel....but is that enough to make a difference? And will his gun kill prey as affectivley as mine? Edited January 2, 2009 by Evil Elvis
Blackbart
Very weird,as you would only lose 10-20fps not 300fps (i think) between a 16" and 20" barrel Did you try your bullets in his gun and vice versa ?as thats all it could be down to.One batch of bullets with less powder ? Evil Elvis
No, but surely with qc etc they should be the same? Someone told me they lost 300fps.....anyone know that actual stats, i dont remember where i got that from.
Blackbart
17hmr data on barrel length This data shows there is negligable difference and the optimum lenght was infact 19 inches ! So as for going through metal and just putting a scuff on it ANGLE ? or as i said dodgy load in a batch of bullets ? Mungler
Did you mate by either his gun or ammo in extra gay?
markbivvy
a good few months back dead eye ive mentioned the difference in hmr ammo of the present compared to hmr ammo of the past. the new stuff is not as explosive as the old. could you have a batch of old hmr ammo and your mate have a new batch. Evil Elvis
You may have a good point as it happens, mine were ordered by someone who didnt use them and taken back to the shop, so yes, they were a lot older than the ones bionicle was using, interesting point....but his are also a lot louder than mine!!!!!! deadeye ive
My comments were along time ago Mark I think sometimes the ballistic tip fragments and sometimes it does'nt .I think to answer your question on whether your set set up will kill more humanely than binocle's well my answer would be in his favour .I have had remmington pass straight through inflicting very little or no visible damage and then riccochet off somewhere (or that is what it at least sounded like) leaving the rabbit to die of plain old shock I think. I too have a CZ varmint 20" and remmington combo so maybe the polymers used in the make up of the tip are alot stronger or to well held together thats all . I chrono'd my batch as well ..6 shots 2437 fps 2495 2537 2540 2531 2518 Pretty damn good !
Teal
I too have noticed that recent batches of HMR bullets (same make) are not as explosive as the ones of the past. Fortunately they are still just as accurate.
njc110381
I'm amazed how much damage that little bullet can do. It really is a pest controllers dream calibre! What I'm really keen to try is shooting some really thick metal with my Tungsten cored .375H&H ammo. I wonder what that will punch through? Billy.
I'm not saying how I know this, but I guarantee that a .17 HMR will punch a hole clean through a £1 coin at 30 yards. Edited January 10, 2009 by harfordwmj
