The first outing of 2009 and the first fox.

This vixen was about 8-900 yards away when we first spotted her,but after a bit of coaxing with the chicken call she eventualy made her mind up she was going to come and have a look. She made her way slowly over the stubble and got to about 180 yards and just as i got on her she sneaked off into the long grass on the side of the river bank(dohh)Then began a long game of cat and mouse with her just giving fleeting glances of herself. This went on for about 20 mins !Just when i thought she had sniped off she appeared next to a tree.I got straight onto her and she was face on nothing obstructing the shot,BANG!Number 1 in the bag.

Strangely enough there was no exit hole noticeable but one hell of an entrance !

Cheers lads, seen another 5 but they wouldnt play ball.It seems as though we have shot all the dumb ones and the remaining foxes are very sly indeed. They either stay 400 plus yards away or if you suprise them they run like their tails on fire as soon as you put the lamp on !

I think the fact that 5 out of the last 6 have been vixens has cut down on the amount of wandering dogs we are seeing.Going to have another look out tonight and see what i can find.

We have good hedges round our way, lots of errrmm fertiliser

Had a blank tonight, only seen 3 foxes and covered 5000 acres. The moral of the story...Dont go looking for foxes if its sleeting, snowing, raining and -5 degrees....cos they dont like coming out to play.

Number 2 was taken at a friends farm,but not with a rifle(or a camera :good: )

This one is number 3 and was a belter.Taken at a ranged 226 metres(yes i had the rangefinder set to metres)which is about 240ish yards i think. He was lying up against a mound sheltering from the wind and rain.It was on a newish farm that we got last year because of lamb losses and the fact we got the lamb thief first night there made the sun shine out of our backsides and we were given the freedom of the farm so to speak, come and go when you want but keep them foxes away from my lambs and chickens.

Like i said he was lying up against a mound of earth sheltering and he wasnt in the mood for moving, so i positioned the jeep so the wind was blocked a bit.The wind was going right to left between me and him and very strong.I actually aimed 6" to the right of the fox,got comfortable between gusts of wind and pulled the trigger, then there was that tell tale thud, the kind of thud that is a sure sign. The fox never moved a muscle and i did doubt for a second the shot was good untill his shiny eyes dimmed and then went out.

A nice dog,and a perfect headshot from 226 metres,the bullet entering his eye...well chuffed

4 AND 5 bit the bullet tonight including my longest fox to date.I didnt have my rangefinder with me but i know he was a loooooooooooong way off.I am going to pick him tomorrow and will range the yardage and take a pic.Didnt pick him tonight as it was lashing down and he was 2 fields away and couldnt get to him in motor as its too wet.Watched him through scope for a while to make sure he was gone, but he dropped to the shot and never moved a muscle. He looked like a big dog but tomorrow will tell.
