  1. Right so! no its just the bitch looks like my boy he is 8yrs and still hunting like a train. I am finding it hard to get anything decent compared to him. Might try a cocker next although he is still outhunting dogs half his age but that cant last forever.
  2. That's a lovely bitch you have, I was watching some of your videos. What lines are in her and what age is she if you don't mind me asking?
  3. Nice Benelli, I have a woodcock 2o bore, I find it a little light and flippy this season although have shot well previously. How do you find the 12 bore? Also what is the sxs? Great shooting by the way
  4. The Irish Water Spaniel are known as a bit of a clown. They are incredibly amusing and as a retriever are second to none. Some can be narky to strangers. I have had one that would set on pheasants, the one I have now is flushing. They are not a patch on a good springer or cocker unlessd trained how to flush as it doesn't come naturally. They are not afraid of cover. They are a fantastic peg or water dog. Very smart dog, very loyal. I don't think i could ever imagine life without one. The only problem is that when excited they can drool excessively from the mouth but that can be sorted with a quick rub of a cloth, it wont happen when they are used to a situation. They look amazing and never shed. Good guard dogs as well.
  5. Ran the falkens on a pajero, on my second set, I reckon they are a bargain tbh. Not as good as the wranglers I had on once but good enough for me to put on a new set yesterday. A fraction more noise on road but very little in it.
  6. Mk2 golf diesel 478k. Running like a bird.
  7. If she is in heat it can happen or if she has been done for Kennel cough they can lose there nose for at least 6 months.
  8. I wouldn't worry too much what they think mate about 25 inch guns. I know a car that is very difficult to drive for 90% of people and not comfortable, so can we conclude it's useless. Yes we can. By the way it's any Ferrari from the last 30 years!
  9. Thanks for getting back to me, just looked up that 'lick granuloma' and had never heard of it till now. Strange one alrite. Are you finding that the woodcock have moved to drier ground with all the rain? I am having a bumper year on woodock here in mayo, have put up 97 woodock this year between 2 dogs and I haven't been out in 2 weeks.
  10. Why 4? There is 250,000 resident woodcock in the the British isles, with the migrants this will grow to 1 million. They are not as rare as people thought, new research has highlighted that.
  11. Great shooting, what age is Lass now? Molly looks like she is mad for cover with her leg cut and all.
  12. I have an auto terios and my average is 30mpg and I drive at a steady 50mph. I have had a 1998 Jimny and a 94 vitara, for comfort and space the terios is the best and it is very reliable. If you are doing a 100 or less miles a week then it will not break the bank on fuel. They don't have the same ground clearance as the Jimny but are still very good off road, I would never go back to the Jimny now and I do take it it to very bad spots but I have all terrain tyres. I couldn't stick the Jimny as I was doing 300 miles a week and it was a bone shaker, they are very good though. The terios would be better for you based on what you have said.
  13. I have a Benelli Woodcock 20bore with 24 inch barells. The tightest choke it comes with is half, it is a beaut and yes they are as good as they say.
  14. Any chance you bought it in Mayo, came across the same gun a while back and there not great to be honest, much better guns out there for the money.
  15. It is illegal to shoot hens in the south unless you have a licence that you would have on an estate shoot, for the rough shooting man its cocks only
  16. How dare you suggest that I am a breaker of spaniels. That dog that didn't have a name till he was 8 months was bought by me at 8 months after I saw the horrible conditions he was living in, I didn't expect him to flourish but he has. You could do with getting some manners before you post again. At no stage did I suggest that My ESS was worth 2500, secondly if you have a Yorkshire Terrier that you have shot over then good for you. I am delighted that your getting use and enjoyment out of your mothers Terrier.
  17. Openshaw is my idol mate, I train my dogs for rough shooting, openshaw trains his dog for total obedience in a heated trial. Openshaw therefore does it in a slower manner of conditional training that once the dog is trained will have a significantly less chance of letting him down on the day. My dogs once they get training dont let me down but as every one knows one must always be on guard with a spaniel. I have only started to train dogs in the last 2 years but feel I am doing well. The 11 month dog I have is doing all I have said earlier and in fairness he has melinbrook evita, merlinbrook vinca, and badgercourt warlord in his recent pedigree so I have good breeding to start with, he also is very smart and wants to please. Due to the nature of my work I am free from 8am to 4pm everyday so I can spend a lot of time with the dog. In training at the moment I have a 11 month ESS, 14 month Cocker, 16 month Sprocker(stubborn ******!) and a 20 month Ess. I am no pro by any means but am doing well at what I love. I have taken my time with the oldest Ess and there is no doubt he is steadier as a result. I have learn't a lot and I am learning more everyday, it's hard work mastering a spaniel, I am lucky in that I have a desire for it more than most men. Thanks to all who have posted to me. Regards Peter
  18. Its very hard to understand what you are on about mate, I have never heard anyone talking about a hpr flushing in the manner you do. You would swear it was a spaniel. At the risk of you thinking that I am an ####, you do know that your dog is to point? Is your dog pointing or what?
  19. I don't see why anybody would have to see that both parents are 'capable of reaching the fully trained stage' to know that the parents are good dogs. For example I have a 11 month old cocker that I have been training for the last 3 months. The dog did not even know his own name at 8 months thats how raw the dog was. The dog is now retrieving dummies land and water and fur, 100% on recall, hup, stop whistle and is hunting his ground close and in a nice pattern. The dog is starting to take to cover and has a very good nose for hidden dummies with scent on them. He has been shot over last week and I have shot 2 snipe over him which he has delivered to hand. I will not be trialing the dog but will shoot over him myself and am surprised how far the training has progressed in such a short time, at no time have I pushed the dog he is just very curious and smart. I do not need to progress and further to know that this is an excellent spaniel, I know that he will be worth breeding from without further training him. I would assume that the op has at least as much training done as I have or am I wrong?
  20. Don't worry about the comments mate. You don't need to fully train a bitch to know that she is worth breeding from. If your bitch is hunting, is biddable ie can learn commands and takes to it well, is retrieving and does the basics then anybody with a brain can tell she is worth breeding from and of course not gun shy which is quite rare anyway. If the dog is 2500 it should be top class, have a look and you will know, as I said it should blow you away. If you can afford a polished spaniel why should you deny yourself. You will be long enough dead. The trained dog I bought cost 2000 euro and still gives me pleasure and has made shooting game a delight.
  21. Good point, I think he is thinking he will use it for the next 2-3 years as his boy is still a bit young yet then he will get it altered I hope!
  22. Great, they are actually very good quality guns and can be very expensive for some of there models. I have shot a 20sxs Ugartechea and am very sorry I didn't have it. I don't think you will be sorry for buying it.
  23. Thanks mate, we do our own rough shoot that he will try the 410 on, it make sense that there would be a lot of runners. Maybe a 28bore would be better.
