ferrets and rats

I don't consider using ferrets on rats is cruel to the ferret, depending on the situation.

On big locations always allow plenty of time for the battle.

Don't start at 3 o'clock on a Winters afternoon.

If the ferrets kill a few rats underground, you may have to wait a couple of hours.

I will not put ferrets down in rubbish dumps etc (especially around Farms), where there might be broken glass, poison, oils , or other harmful things.

Having seen terriers grab and kill ferrets in mistake for rats, I will only use nets.

When we used ferrets on rats, we always used a lot of ferrets.

Depending on the size and type on infestation (building), it would be between 5 and 12 .

This created enough underground panic, that most of the rats bolted into the nets.

Any that didn't, or got blocked in, had to face at least two ferrets.

In what must amount to 100's of excursions, I can recall less than 10 times that a ferret was bitten, or cut and required some antiseptic treatment (no stitches, lost eyes or teeth etc).

In the past I ahve had a couple of ferrets that have sustained serious bites from rats..................................................but by the same token have had them injured from a good kick from blocked in rabbit...

I wouldnt say thats its cruel, but as cranfield rightly points out, its not always the best idea in some situations.

I think more of my ferrets than to put them on to rats, filthy blasted things !!. I do like shooting them on bait with the pre charged air rifle though (rats that is, not my ferrets).

If you'll take my advice keep ferrets well clear of any bury that you think may hold a fox, had a very good ferret killed by a fox in a bury you'd never have expected it to get down.

Don't expect I'm the most experienced ferreter on here but I've done a fair bit over the years and seen some wierd things happen. I take quite a bit of time getting my ferrets just so and I respect them as they work well for me.

I agree,my ferrets are too valuable to me to use on rats.I use an old strimmer engine with a pipe on the exhaust, fill up with petrol overdosed with 2 stroke, pipe in the hole and give it full throttle, doesnt take too long for mr ratty to make an appearance only to find a pack of rather excited terriers waiting for some excercise.

Used ferrets on rats for a long while, and they do a very good job, they tend to get the odd bite but nothing too serious.... jills are the best size for ratting for sure, don't get many sets were you can use a hob.... a friend of mine has a lot of prime rat hunting on a few farms... heres a few hours at it
