optomist
Hi, Thought I would share a tip for cleaning .17 HMR barrel and open to suggestions as to wether good or bad, but works for me. I use cotton buds cut in half (midway along length), and the cut end fits perfectly inside the female screw thread of cleaning rod. then push thro bore with fluid of choice. also I can use 17 jag which fits inside cut end of plastic tube. nice tigt fit, good cleaning action. Some buds are a little too tight and prone to leaving little fluff behind but I always follow up with phosphour bronze brush, just in case there a few fibres left in the bore. What do you think any safety probs? Cheers Optomist

babushka
Hello optomist, I think your being a little too optomistic if your expecting that to work every time,I reckon sooner are later you'll get a bud stuck up there,I wouldn't chance it,you'd have some crack trying to get something out of that tiny barrel... :o .bab.. snare1
Theres a lot of good gear out there to do this job why compromise on cleaning ,it`s what keeps your rifle accurate and improves it` s longevity . as a tip only push jags and brushes up from the breach end take them off before pulling the rod back never pull brushes back you could remove fash that will destabalise the bullet causing barrel harmonics to come into play and it will reduce accuracey . optomist
Cheers Chaps its hard to supress that Yorkshire blood in me. Good point about not puling brush back thro from muzzle. not aware of the issue. Presumably you refer to fasche as tiny bit of metal arising from machining that could be pulled back into bore from very tip or barrel as tool emerged during manufacture? I like the little plasitc loop idea within which you insert small cleaning patch, got one for .22 but can you get them for .17? what is everyone else using? Get yourself a length of Nylon rope and make a knot on one end, then pull er through
njc110381
I only bore snake mine. Seems to shoot well enough and it's seen a fair few rounds!
Baldrick
I also only Boresnake my HMR (about every 400-500 rounds). It takes at least 30 rounds to get the POI back on target if I deep-clean the rifle with a rod. The exposed rim of the female thread at the end of your rod will damage the rifling, if it is not supported by a proper jag. That's not worth the risk for a £7 jag. I use Tetra cleaning stuff. I have some of the .17 patches, not that I will use them unless absolutely necessary.

LeeinVA
How often do y'all wash or clean your bore snakes? I do not use them as the crud can be transfered from one rifle to another.. The rod is the way to go as it is rigid and can work the brush back and forth if need be.. Just my two cents gents..
dogfox
bore snake all the time for me, if you dont get everything out the first time, which rarely happens as they are a very tight fit, you just pull them through twice more, and it shifts everything! martinl
Excuse my ignorance but do you put any solvents or oils on the bore snake/s or just pull it through as it came out of the box?
realtreedave
drop of 3in1 or wd40 down the barrel first is all you need
funky
I use a jag first with a bit of gun oil then 4 wads to clean the excess oil a dirt out then buff it with a mop all this is done from breech to muzzle works fine for me
deadeye ive
drop of 3in1 or wd40 down the barrel first is all you need Avoid leaving oil in the barrel .OK for long term storage reasons but I would'nt advise it at any other time due to the additional pressures generated from the first round going through .Solvent cleaner that evaporates away . Ignoring the unproved facts around ammonia you can't beat a bit of Butches Bore Shine
ROB REYNOLDS UK
use kroil for carbon .sweets 7.62 for copper removel 15mins tops for sweets to be left in barrel..
Guest topshot_2k
i use cotton buds then push through with a wool mop, job done
optomist
Thanks Chaps good spread of views and experience on the subject and have taken points on board. Didn't appreciate the issue with oil increasing barrel pressure on first load i use bore scrubber and leave it wet but always clean thro before firing. Also refined the cotton bub idea down to fine art. cut bud in half and with bit of dexterity you can comfortably push bud into breech and then push it thro with phosphour brush, amazing amount of grot cleared and brush clears any fibres. How often do you need to clean i always clean after use and try and leave with some oil in/bore scrubber but how many rounds between cleans do you think before accuracy affected? optomist
