liamlumsden
i am applying for my FAC very soon (sorting land out right now before i try for it ) i was just wondering which rifle would be the best for what i need i sort of new to rifles but am not new to the health and safety of them i will be shooting rabbits (which i do want to use dont want them turned inside out ) but i will also be shooting foxes as this is what the farmer wants rid of the most so i am stuck for what will do the job for me if i am granted the fac thankful for all replys liam lumsden
garyb
In my book you'll need more than 1 rifle for that job(s) One in .22lr for the bunnies and a .223 for Mr Fox wouldn't be a bad idea. Some will say HMR... I say why limit yourself & buy a centerfire instead.
liamlumsden
thanks for your reply gary the problem i was thinking is that would i be able by the law to have 2 rifles as soon as i have the fac if granted
garyb
Within reason... you can have as many as you want! You must have good reason to require them.. but from what you've already said - you do. Providing the land is cleared it should just be a matter of form filling Good luck

Lloyd90
I got 2 slots my first try, 22lr for vermin (rabbits) and a 17 HMR for rabbits and fox, although if you were after fox specifically then I would defo be looking for a centrefire (222,223,22-250 or a 243) The FEO said he would grant me one if I wanted but I would need to nominate a mentor. At the time I didn't put down for one but might put in for one soon See how Im feeling haha

njc110381
Ideally you want two rifles. For the Rabbits a rimfire of some sort would be best. If your ground will be flat I suggest a HMR rather than a .22lr for ricochet reasons, but if it's hilly then you'll be ok with either. The .22lr is good to 100 yards at a push, the .17 does 150 relatively easily and has a flatter trajectory meaning range estimation can be a little out and you'll still get a good hit. For the Fox .223 is a good honest calibre. Ammo isn't too expensive and is widely available. You may struggle to get a centrefire on first application but there's no harm trying, they wont hold it against you. Your force may allow you HMR for Fox. It will do the job but it really is expecting too much from the little round and it's far from ideal. I'd say under 50 yards is the limit. Some will say more, but I've shot the gun a lot and I've had hit foxes run at under 100 yards. To me that isn't acceptable. I will only shoot them from very close range with mine now. I used to have .22lr, HMR and .223. I found the .223 really over the top for Rabbits and more than enough for Fox. If you can shoot well they will down a big one at 400+ yards no problem! I sold my .223 and .22lr and bought a .22 Hornet, which could also be a good round for you. The Hornet is the smallest common .22 centrefire cartridge. I've shot Rabbits with mine and they weren't wrecked. With the right bullet they will pass through without doing vast amounts of damage, probably even less than a HMR. They are also capable of taking a Fox out to 200 yards. It's a tough little bullet to get your head around as they're known not to be that accurate, but CZ seem to make some better than average accuracy guns in the calibre. The are best if you use home loads but mine shoots factory stuff at about 1" at 100 yards - good enough really. Your FEO would also be more accepting of it as it's a long way behind .223 in the power stakes, and it will look good if you ask for what many consider to be the minimum calibre for Fox. If price of ammo is an issue. .22lr is cheap, maybe 5-10 pence per load. HMR is more, about 25ppl. Hornet is 50ppl (if you load yor own, 20ppl). .223 is around 75ppl (home loads about 35ppl). What range can you get the Foxes in to? If you can get them close just ask for HMR for Vermin and Fox. It will do the job until you're more experienced and are comfortable with a bigger calibre. Pipmoff
Just to confirm that if you can justify having use for the rifles you ask for then there is no reason not to be granted them. I would go for a .22lr for the bunnies and .223 or .222, 22-250 for fox or if you think you may be shooting deer in the future then .243 or 6.5x55 for deer and fox. I had 22lr, 17hmr for vermin / long range vermin and 223rem for fox on my initial application then within a year I added 6.5x55 for deer and fox. When I had my interview with my feo he looked through his paperwork and said now you want 3 rifles do you really need 3 well you have the use for them so I dont see a problem. Also just be sensible on the amount of ammo you ask for to go with each of them. I have buy 500 rounds and hold 600 rounds for each of my rimfires and buy 100 hold 150 on the centre fires. Good luck with your application, Phil. Edited February 25, 2009 by Pipmoff

Best of luck
liamlumsden
where do u write this if you want one ?
Toombsy
There's areas on your FAC application form for all that... It will ask you what rifles you would like to apply for and also the maximum amount of ammo you will be buying in one go, and the max amount of ammo you will have in storage. You'll need a secure cabinet for your rifle, and a secure safe for your ammo - they need to be stored separately. I have just applied and got loads of good info from this site by using the search facility at the top of the page. You'll find plenty of info if you search for FAC, application, certificate - those types of things.

Pipmoff
Liam you will find the application form is a bit confusing. As others have said make sure you state the calibre of rifle you want ie .22lr rimfire or .17hmr rimfire or .223 rem centrefire etc. Also in the section for these add that you want a moderator ie .22lr moderator this has to be stated for each rifle you apply for if you wish to add a moderator to that rifle. The ammo needs to be filled in as I mentioned in my last post, how many rounds you wish to hold or buy also if they are for pest control make sure you state including expanding ammo in this section. I chose 500 rounds for the rimfire ammo as this is what is known as a brick and what the ammo comes packaged in 10 x 50 round boxes this allows you to buy a quntity of ammo that should be from the same batch on the production line and therefore give you more consistent accuracy.
