That will be two of us soon then Tommy, you must be chuffed to bits mate. This is one of the things i'm really looking forward to. This and taking him fishing. Well done young man (Ross Tommy, not you ), keep going out with your dad and you will learn so much more than just shooting, plus as time goes by you will be able to outshoot your dad and then show him a trick or two. . That's if you're not already All the best Adam

Fisherman Mike
Great Photo Tommy, Thats what shooting is all about. He looks a happy chap. RB. I remember vividly when my dad first took me fishing at Claydon Pike gravel pit near Lechlade, Glos in 1965. My first fish was a small Jack caught on Lob Worm... I was hooked from that point on and my middle name John was changed by friends to Jack and it has stuck ever since. Even my parents now call me Jack. When I was 11 I was allowed to cycle the 16 miles there and back with my rod strapped to the cross bar. This I did most weekends and school Holidays. My 11 year old is very sporty but is heavily into Golf, Cricket and Rugby in that order, he shows little interest in country pursuits but he is happy and that is what matters most to me. FM. old rooster
Nice one !!! good to start em young so they learn safety and respect for guns early on, can't see from the pics but is that .410 an O/U ?. Been looking for one for some time now. FM, going to have a try for some reservoir trout tomorrow, weather looks set mild, light Southerlies so should be ideal. If you ever fancy sharing a boat on Draycote for a day fishing "Northampton Style" just let me know as I've all the gear for that now. Never fished Chew or Blagdon Mike, shouldn't have bothered at Pitsford yesterday as the wind had changed since the weekend and put the fish down a bit. Managed a couple of stockies but nothing to go mad about. Looking forward to seeing the nymphs, really appreciate you doing some for me mate !! Draycote is another man made reservoir, plenty of contours to locate resident fish on, ideal for a bit of "back dragging" with heavy sinking lines, can break the day up fishing nymphs in season as well. May time should be good, let's aim for then ?.

Thanks Tommy, just that I'm looking for a db .410 to try an experiment over decoys, pigeons will regularly come within 20 yards of the hide while decoying and I'm wondering what effect shooting with a less noisy gun might have on the incoming birds. Cartridges and gun lighter to carry so should be interesting.
rb5037
O.R Why not try a hushpower (think that's the name, hushpower, hushpuppy, can't remember). If you have an old gun you don't use much i think they can convert them into a silenced shotgun. Think they still do this. Do a search on pw for more info, but i'm sure you already knew this :*) Adam
ferretmanabu
Excellent tommy. Hope you get to do plenty more shooting with your son. How old was Ross when you started him off shooting? and did you get him to practice on clays first? I'm asking because my 7 year old brother's always asking me to take him shooting so I was thinking of getting him a .410 and practicing on some clays first. Would you recommend skeet or sporting to practice on? Thanks.

Would you recommend skeet or sporting to practice on? Thanks. Just my opinion Ferretmanabu, power to you for taking him ,to take your 7 year old brother clay shooting would be terrific,.410 or 20 gauge semi low recoil loads would be the preferance. Skeet would be my choice for 1st timers ,reasons access and not to far to walk for the guy , station 6-7 low house first about 6 rounds ,you need a result (couple of hits for him to see what its about) then rest ,dont let him try to much at one time, make sure he dosent get bored , let him watch you ,make sure he hits targets, try not to have him hold the gun up for to long a period ,he is a little guy and it will wear him down ,remember " let him have fun in a safe way" make sure he wants to go again ,its easy for young kids to get bored . good luck let us know if he likes it Martin
ferretmanabu
Thanks for that Martin. I think I'll keep a lookout for a nice little .410 for him. What kind of loads do .410 cartridges usually have? Is it the same 24g or 28g as skeet?
ernyha
What kind of loads do .410 cartridges usually have? Is it the same 24g or 28g as skeet? A bit optimistic I think, just checked a 2.5" .410 cartridge with 14grams of No 6 in it. The 3" ones hold a bit more but not all guns are capable of shooting them. natman
Tommy, Great is'nt it.I'm just restarting shooting the grey wonder with my young lad (nat) whose 12.Just got him shod with a 20B and we are off next Friday doing some decoying over a recently aquired 1200 acre shoot in Herts. I just hope competion does'nt get in the way as its done with my boy withg fishing. He's currently "winning" over me alround with the biggest carp , Uk @ 26lb 5oz and French 38lb 4oz. Joking apart its great fun to have a healthy competion between ole man & son and good luck to you and your lad. Bazza
