Got my first clear round of Skeet today...

Took my Mrs with me today to the Clay Ground. (She wanted to know what "all the fuss is about".).

Anyhoo... I kinda always use Hull Comp X, 28g 7.5. But today they didn't have any so i bought some Ely First, 21g size 7. And i normally leave my 1/2 & 3/4 chokes in, but today i swapped them 1/4 & 1/2.

Now... I'm not sure if i just got lucky, or if the changes to the shot and the chokes made any difference, but i got my first 25 out of 25 on the Skeet. Yippee!!! I've been stuck at 21 for ever now, until today.

My wife suggested that she must have been my lucky mascot and that maybe i should take her with me everytime i go to the shooting ground?? GULP!!!

Do you guys reckon that the shot made the difference, or the chokes?? And God, i hope it doesn't turn out to be true what the wife said. LOL

Congratulations, i've not done it yet!

I'm going to go out on a limb here. There are skeet chokes for shooting skeet. Maybe your 3/4 might of something to do with 1 or 2 missed birds? Everyone says chokes don't matter if the gun's in the right place, but at skeet ranges/distance i'm sure there's a big different on 3/4 and skeet choke that could mean a chip or miss.

Oh and i've not done a straight on skeet chokes!

Cheers for the kind words guys, but not sure if it will happen on a regular basis mind...

The reason i don't use my skeet choke is that i do 125 clays on the English Sporting first, and then we walk on to the Skeet for the last 75. And when i stand there and change my chokes, especially if people are watching/waiting, i feel a bit poncey. A bit like a teawat if i'm honest. So therefore,it's usually 1/2 & 3/4 cos of the rough shooting i normally do.

I reckon i will give the 1/4 & Skeet chokes a go next time, and use 28g size 9's. The question now, is do i take the wife or leave her at home?? LOL

Ah, well i shoot skt and 1/4 on sporting so it means i don't tend to worry about the poncy changing of chokes when i do hit the skeet range.

How do you get on with those chokes on say, the High Tower birds? (120ft in my local) I must admit, that if it wasn't for being self conscious of changing them all the time, or my mates taking the pea-is, then I'd be constantly changing them on every different stand before i even made it to the Skeet.

But i've been shooting 1/2 & 3/4 for a while now and thought i'd got used to them... Until i changed them today and did better than usual.

I'm surprised so many people on this forum care so much about what other people think!

Fuqqem, if you want to change your choke, then blimmin' well change them!! If the same with skeet vests, people actually said they don't want to wear them because of some stupid perceived fashion statement or feeling embarrassed! I must ask whether these guys are hardened pigeon shooters, or 8 year old girls!! :hmm:

Chokes/guns/clothing... they are all tools etc, they aren't flares/afros/or whatever else you think they are.

Only done a decent high tower at Fyflied and Braintree. On both occasions i've missed plenty but when you find that place they all still break. I really wouldn't like to guess what birds were lost to user or choke error. Don't listen to me, i've half ******, but do what you feel is comfortable. Everyone says the happy medium is 1/4 & 1/2 choke, that'll get you round a whole course.

I think that your good score was due to three things. There is no doubt that 21gm carts patern better than 28gm carts alsoo your choke choice was much better for skeet also you shot well so well done. Mind you tell her it was the loving support trust me it will pay off!

Spot on Pete,

You dont try and play a bunker shot with a driver in golf, you use a sand wedge, if you have the tools in your bag use the right one for the job.

I have developed the choke changing habit between stands. Not sure how much difference it makes down range but between the ears it gives me more confidence. No more would I have hit that close looper more if I had cyl in instead of 1/2 or did that long edge on crosser slip through the pattern cos I had skeet in instead of 3/4. I know if I miss its down to the idiot behind the gun :hmm:

As the Cat says regularly "you dont get points for style" Do what breaks most clays for you and sod what other people think you look like :hmm:

I agree with the majority, I use 1/4 in both barrels and normally if I don't break a clay on a sporting layout it is because the shot ain't in the right place. Skeet or cylinder chokes and 9's is the way for skeet. Don't take any notice of the "you need full chokes so you are more accurate" brigade as they are the ones who are stuck on 21.

You will not see any half decent skeet shooters turn up to a competition with a trap gun and 71/2's.

Oh and it is a good job the Cat says you don't get points for style as he is the most unstylish person you will ever meet. Just think of Compo from last of the summer wine. :hmm: :hmm:

on sporting i'm running at 78% this year.

I hit the first 8/10 and he's there again. yer on for a ten here pete, WALLOP, 8/10.

I might try going round on my own, i'm sure i can do it, But I'll still be able to hear him, HEY UP A FULL UN COMING UP.
