Also very quiet in my neck of the woods . Odd bird or two on the grazed parts of the rape fields not worth setting up for . The rape will soon finish flowering and start to pod up .Hopefully the pigeons will want to return and have a go when the pods start to form . The next best oppotunity will be on laid cereals ,wheat and barley unless you have peas to have a go at . Then of course we will have the magic of the stubble season ,rape ,wheat and barley . Its not all that far away now .

Good hunting , Harnser .

I was on peas today.... 300 acres in different areas and not a pigeon in sight, Shot 8 rooks and did'nt even see a woodie all day let alone one drop in the pattern.

A week ago they were very much in the woods feeding on tree buds. 50 acre pea field, not a single pigeon, 10 acre beech wood alongside it about 300 feeding in the tree tops. Still did not stop the 'pea man' coming along and setting up his gas gun.

I went out yesterday, but beforehand i popped to gunshop and bought a single crow decoy.

When i got out onto the field of beans i set out a horseshoe of pigeon deeks, put the rotary 20ft away from me and then stuck the single crow decoy 10ft from the horseshoe so it was visible against the brown soil from all directions.

The crow decoy seemed to give the woodies a sense of security and after 4.5hrs i picked up 43 which wasnt too bad.I did also loose atleast 10 where they dropped into the wheat in next field and into the scrub behind me,but they can stay there cos last time i almost broke my leg when i stood in a rabbit burrow.

One thing suprised me though.A pair came in and i shot the first then the second which gave the telltail puff of feathers, but it turned round and flew off! I watched it flying across the field of wheat nearby then suddenly it dropped from the sky right infront of the farmer who was crop spraying! :good:

Weather was fantastic and i enjoyed my day.

Starlight ,

Stick in there ,about the only thing that you can be sure of with pigeon shooting ,is that they WILL hit the peas at some stage .
