Fisherman Mike
Once again we see the sad demise of a former icon of British manufacturing. Anybody who has had any experience of the marque will know what I am talking about. Ok so they may not have had the overall kudos of the big three German imports or the general cosmopolitan appeal of Ford, Renault or Peugeot but in their time Rover produced some of the most stunning cars to come out of a British factory. My Father had a 3.5 P6 in 1976 before him my Gramp drove a 3.5 Coupe and a Rover 100, I had until last year a 75 classic SE which is quite easily the most beautiful car I have ever driven, and I have driven a fair few. I hope that the Government does find some way to finance Rover after all its not a large sum in the scheme of things... consider the £1.5 billion spent to secure a useless lump of rock in the Atlantic in 1982, £3.5 billion to secure the Saudi Oil supplies in 1991 in the name of terrorist control and a further £ 4.7 billion (and rising all the time) in 2001 not to mention the immeasurable cost of the loss of human life.... I dont think its asking too much for a bit of government aid do you? Also... and completely off subject whats that Murdering Dictator Robert Mugabe doing at the popes funeral, now if thats not a bloody insult to humanity and everything the Roman Catholic church stands for then i must have had my brain sucked out by aliens last night... If we Brithish and Americans want to waste the domestic revinue on war mongering he should be the first on the list FM.
Wookie
Steer clear of politics and religion is what I say... But, now you've mentioned it, I'll be missing Rover _if_ they go under. My 600 is not a bad car and it has done near enough 40k since last year with only minor gripes, which puts it above the Omega I had before it. As for Mugabe... Don't get me started. For him to even pretend to be god-fearing is a joke. Wookie
wabbitbosher
If Mr. B.liar and his Chums put as much effort into saving Rover as they did Banning hunting "well" You can see him now "B######S" To Rover "Ban Hunting" Time to go Mr. Blair! Timeserved Waster Apathetic *** OR "T##T" for short I had a P6 as well , one of the best cars i ever had Happy "pest control" dudes WB
Cranfield
Rover did make quality cars, their top of the range models easily competed with the European equivalents of the day. However, lets not forget they were effectively a "nationalised Industry", from the mid 1970's until the mid 1990's and sucked in quite a lot of Taxpayers money. When the Government offloaded Rover to British Aerospace it was the "kiss of death", especially when BAe had to pay back the £50 million sweetener the Government had given them (as the EU declared it an illegal payment). In 2000 BMW offloaded it for £10, to a bunch of "Venture Capitalists". I was associated with Organisations at that time, who were offered the opportunity to acquire what was left of Rover. A quick look at the books, showed it was a Company beyond saving. I don't think another penny of Taxpayers money should go to Rover, which is a Private Company whose Major Shareholders have profited handsomely from their brief period of ownership. If left to normal commercial pressures, Rover would have ceased to trade in the mid 70's. Mugabe is a diseased rabid dog and should have been "put down" years ago. Its a pity there isn't any oil in Zimbabwe, if there were perhaps the Western Leaders would have dealt with this scum some time ago.

Shotgun-Sean
Rover cars are **** out of all this rover thing the only thing they have saved is the "K SERIES" engine and for those that dont know about engines these are the worst they blow a head gasket without fail at about 50K miles. I have to agree with a few of you guys the old ROVER the P5 and P6 were good british strong built cars but the latest i wouldnt want one if i won it!! cheers sean
lurcherboy
Its a shame that they are going, but they were iffy to say the least. Skoda turned around a vehicle known as the skip. Surely Rover could have set the sights higher than the **** they have turned out over the last 10 years or so. One or two 'good models' do not make a marque. When they had the Honda engine and suspension to work with they had the opportunity to do make amends but they blew it. Still, I suppose the board will be allright, they sorted nice pensions for themselves a few years ago. Glad I got out at the same time as BMW LB
mel b3
over the years rover have built some fine vehicles but at the same time they have designed and built some of the biggest white elephants that have graced tarmac and i dont think the gov't should pour any more tax payers money into the black hole, however i still think that it is a very sad day.(i used to have dealings with longbridge via work and i could tell you stories that would make your hair curl). as for my opinions on robert mugabe, well im with cranfield and think he should be put down like the dog that he is. Devilishdave
I think a few of you may be a bit harsh on good old Rover they have built the Mini, Range rover, Discovery, Defender, Freelander, MGF all not bad motors in my book. Some undoubtedly the best in their class. Dave

Dave Undoubtably DD. But Rover were the fitters and did not really fulfill their potential.
