I'm in the market for a new scope for the .270 when it arrives, but having a S&B 8x56 has spoilt me ,having been advised to go for a variable scope for Deer stalking has given me a few unanswered questions!

1.25mm or 30mm tube

2.Which reticlue -I like the varmint reticule that Leupold show on their site

3.Which brand of the above,I have left out some I know but feel the choices are as listed.

Having found a web site that sells them cheaper than anyone else also makes me wonder which is the best value for money.Likes of how S&B whether made in Hungary or Germany with the same components have such a difference in price!!!

Please help me to make the right decision.

My answers as follows:

1) Get a 30mm tube. If you plump for a 1" tube, you will always wonder whether a 30mm tube would have let more light through and extended your shooting window. I can't understand why people buy 1"-tubed scopes when 30mm is available.

2) Don't buy anything with a 'varmint' reticle for stalking purposes. You will lose it in the gloom, and it will frustrate you intensely. An illuminated spot reticle on thick stadia will enable you to acquire a target quickly and without dithering. Get something like a standard S&B L3 or Zeiss No 60 reticle.

3) Don't buy Leupold (if you are shooting in low light). They are great scopes for daylight shooting, but absolute cack when light fails. They are not made for European shooting. I have been through the 'what scope?' dilemma many times over the last few years. My expensive and tedious quest for superlative optics ended when I plonked a Zeiss Victory 3-12x56 IR on my .270. S&B, Swarovski, Kahles, and Docter are all great, but none of them beat Zeiss Victory in my opinion.

Mark's recommendation is a good one (the 30mm-tubed 4-16x50 Swaro on Gregor Macleod's website is also a very fine scope). Keep an eye on the classifieds on Stalking Directory and the dreaded BBS.

Always thought that the only advantage of a 30mm tube was more adjustment being available and that there was little/no difference in light transmission between 30mm and 1" tubes? Your point will make me reconsider my next scope choice.

Extra adjustment range is naturally beneficial, but much more so to target and vermin shooters (hence 34mm-40mm tubes on PMIIs/USO/IORs). I'm prepared to pay more for a 30mm tube on the basis that it might let more light through for foxing/stalking.

Not sure variable power is all that necassary (but it is nice to have). I have a Burris EuroDiamond 30mm tube 3-12x50 on my .270 and rarely use it on anything other than 9x.

I put that on after I fell out with S&B (8x56) as the one I had was all over the place. I do agree tho' they are very nice and if my faith hadnt been dented I would have another.

The Swaros I've looked through give very crisp images but of the rest I would pitch the Burris against them happily. Excellent VFM IMHO.

I have just bought a swarovski 2.5 x 15 x 56P BT N0 4A reticule body 30mm from gregor macleods in tain the best purchase i have made in years, having spent a few months going over web sites looking at prices and all deals. What made my mind up was i tried the scope in the car park out side the shop and found it the best i have tried so far.and was sold on it, but my wife nearly killed me when she found out how much it was. But if you want quality it costs.

Ah thats helped, got to admit that the offers on Macleod site are good,I also found lamping.co.uk to be good for price but the imformation on each scope isnt clear.

Baldrick you mention the Ziess Victory is this the same as the V series listed on the lamping web site or can you gain as little imformation from it as I can!!

Buying any optics is a very individual thing.

What suits one persons eyes well may not be the same for another.

I would go to someone who keeps a decent stock of good quality european optics and have a look through as many as possible. Take your time and get the right one for you.

Some say schmidts are the best, others Zeiss, swarovski, khales etc...

After looking through all the top scopes on the market in low light and daylight I went for the Swarovski Z6i 2-12x50.

I was so impressed with it I bought another one a few months later, this to my eyes was the best of the bunch.

MD, I very much doubt that Lamping.co.uk is still in business - a lot of people have queried those prices. A new Zeiss 6-24x56 IR for £1,030?!

Moses, I see that Swarovski has introduced two high-mag Z6i scopes, one up to 30x.

That's right Baldrick, they have released a 3-18x50 and a 5-30x50 comes out in July.

Whilst I think they may get away with the 3-18x50 I don't think they have a ret fine enough to use 30x mag at range.

The 4ai in my opinion, at that sort of magnification obscures too much of the target.

Until they come up with some better rets Swaro and Zeiss will continue to loose out to Nightforce for the longer range stuff.

One thing I am looking forward to seeing is the new Swarovski EL high def binos, should be out this year mmmmmm

Moses, I haven't yet paid too much attention to the Z6i series, but based on the images on Swaro's website, I'd agree with you that the 4ai reticle looks a little imprecise.

I'd say there are two brands that offer the ideal combination of superlative glass coupled with the precise reticles for long-range work: the S&B PMII series and the high-mag IORs such as the 4-28x56. I used the latter scope on Sunday, and it is blindingly good (as clear as anything I've used to date). It is a bit of a monster though, like the PMII.
