joeshaw08
I'm applying for my FAC in the next few weeks, and need some advice on whether to go for the HMR or the .22. I'll be using it for rabbits, but as far as I am aware you can take Foxes if close enough with a HMR, can you do the same with a .22?? My knowledge on rimmies is quite limited, so any advice would be appriciated. Cheers, Joe
Billy.
Just search the forum for your exact question. There are endless topics on this. My answer. Get both and yes, you can kill a fox with a .22lr, but I would use HV rounds and headshots only. Edited May 25, 2009 by harfordwmj

humperdingle
If you're wanting to shoot fox aswell, my advice would be to contact your local firearms licensing office. They will advise you on whether or not ANY rimfire, and specifically which one, can be used on fox. Some force areas - Including mine - Will not allow rimfire use on fox. For the bunnies, work out what distance most of your shooting is done at. I had both .22lr and .17hmr at one stage, and ditched the .17hmr purely because most of my bunny shooting was under 80 yards. This also cut the costs of ammo, and gave me a quiet bunny calibre. Or has been stated, just get both.

joeshaw08
Sounds good, i'll be putting in for both then just to be sure I guess the .22 is the cheapest option in the long run regarding ammo etc, and it's the quieter rifle. I've heard the hmr is more accurate over longer distances? Might be good for abit of bunny sniping... Regarding makes, i've only ever shot a CZ .22 and found it was good, however, nothing to compare it too. I've had a couple of shot with a Sako recently, and was shocked that there was no recoil whatsoever and very little sound...didn't realise id fired it! Also extremely accurate. What make would you guys recommend? Id like to try and get a rifle and scope set up for £250 or lower....is this do-able?
Billy.
Fundamentally, the two guns are the same... It was probably just down to the moderator that was used that made it quieter and had less recoil. Don't forget to ask for a sound mod on all your guns. Most scopes will suffice (Just avoid any ebay chinese scopes). Don't for for anything silly like a 24-52x60 as it's just silly. A fixed mag scope will do you fine. HMR will shoot much flatter over longer distances. A humane maximum distance for a rabbit would be around 250 yards. However (before everyone jumps down my throat) you will not be knowing where that bullet will hit, as it's so easily affected by the wind and other things. So stick to about 175 yards as your max. Not that I've ever shot a Sako quad, but I'm assuming it's not just as easy as screwing another barrel on and off you go. The scope would need rezeroing and I'm pretty sure the point of impact wouldn't be identical if you took a barrel off and put the same one back on. I take my sound mod on and off one of my rifles and it changes, so I'm sure a barrel would be similar. My cz .22lr was £150 and I shot a 1/4" group off it @ 25yards, with just the sling (I've not done it for years). Who knows why the guy wanted to get rid of it, as he must've sold it to the gunsmith for about £90 (With a scope) and it's an excellent piece of kit. Hunt around, as the new guns aren't always the answer. A .22lr that's had a bit of mileage might actually be the better gun. stevethevanman
I would just get the HMR, becuase to be honest, you might sometimes get a double kill with very stupid rabbits but otherwise the HMR is in the same boat. It also does give the abilty to shoot foxes at close'ish ranges...e.g. 70yds and below. However if you get a pest control job and you need silence then the 22LR is a must, but if your just killing rabbits on a farm then the 17HMR's reach and laser trajectory will really help P.S. you might be say 100yds away with the HMR, but when the bullet hits the others around will heare the slap effect so they will go in anyway, same with the 22LR in my opinion Steve Edited May 26, 2009 by stevethevanman
wildfowler.250
I went for HMR first personally but the .22 is cheaper for practising ect, a lot quieter and would kill a fox if the distance was right/shot was on target. But then again the HMR ricochets less, flatter shooting, more accaurate and shoots further.....have fun picking  , I'd go for both
