rascal_2005 Posted June 22, 2009 Report Share Posted June 22, 2009 hi guys my best mate has just got the above from some travellers (long story) and was hopeing to train him as a rabbiter? hes 8 weeks at the mo and i know this is a bit young to start training but we relly want to get prepared for him. at the mo hes defo got potential, he head shakes teddys and wants to chase and bite teddys already, hes fearless already. he has only been at my friends house for a few days and settleing in really well. i belive hes come from working stock but cant be sure. so if anyone out there can help us out that would be great. thanks john boy Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I know a few travellers and they only have the best, good luck with him... If you don't mind me asking how much did you give for him... You will never find training info for a terrier Let him be a puppy and get him fully socialised with people, livestock (horses, cattle, sheep, chickens etc.) and cats .. teach him the basics heal, sit, stay and get him to enjoy his lead. Get him out and about in puplic places town centres and parks, on the lead obviously ... With a terrier it's ALL about instinct and breeding Unfortunately I disagree with Ricky ..... never buy a dog off a traveller unless you have seen both parents working and a traveller will not show you because he will be doing the 'act' illegally, how many traveller's have permission ?? none, no landowner wants them anywhere near ......... Get the pup out with you when you go rabbiting and ensure he's FULLY broken to ferrets, otherwise the obvious will happen. Get him out at an early stage and leave him tethered close by to observe whats going on and do this until he starts to react to rabbits hitting the purse net, at 8-9 months give him the odd dead rabbit to rag ... keep him away from any fox holes. Dave C Posted July 28, 2009 Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 When he is about 6 month take him bushing with other terriers, he will soon pick it up, dont let him take to much interest in the holes after chasing the rabbit down, make sure he can leave it and move onto hunting the next rabbit, he will learn twice as fast when hunting with other terriers, than by himself. We run a Bobery pack of Terriers, Lurchers and a Cocker cross, my last terrier pup started at just under 6 month and was hunting like a pro by 10 month. I know a few travellers and they only have the best,............. They have the best because they go to Working Terrier Shows, see who is winning or who has the best dogs. They then find out where they live then break into their kennel and steal the dogs. I know many a Terrierman who has had their dogs stolen by 'Travellers' never to be seen again. Start him Bushing now and let him go at his own pace, this is a good time of year with lots of baby rabbits hiding in the edges of the maturing crops he can hoover up. As Dave says if he's with other terriers he will learn much quicker. He may not be up for it yet or not show any interest, some dogs don't but only you can judge if they are worth persisting with. My best worker didn't enter her first earth until she was 2 years old and up to then she rarely showed any interest in going to ground.
