Beardo
i'd rather see grass snakes than goldfish - so i'd just keep buying cheap goldfish to feed it
al4x
I'm fairly sure a shovel would work but failing that can't you just catch and re-locate the snake subtly or just deliver it to your local RSPCA place they're good at releasing wildlife no where near where it came from
Beardo
they're protected, so you don't want to go down the shovel route
malkiserow
I'm fairly sure a shovel would work but failing that can't you just catch and re-locate the snake subtly or just deliver it to your local RSPCA place they're good at releasing wildlife no where near where it came from The old lady is 67 and is too far away for me to "pop over and catch it"......... about 200 miles away. Can she get a snake trap? then release it some way off. She really likes her fish, so thanks for the "feed the snake" suggestion Nick Edited June 24, 2009 by malkiserow
tractorboy
if she is 200mile away from you tell us her location and someone on here might be near enough to help her out :(

malkiserow
Get her to get some jack pike in her pond and turn the tables on the thieving ****** Like the thinking MC but won't the pike eat the goldfish? Just had her on the phone.... she is seeing 2 grass snakes now, they like resting on the lilly pads during the day! :(
MC
They probaly will but you can take them out and eat them after they have eaten the snakes. The alternative is to give the snakes a dose of high velocity lead poisoning. Not that I would condone that course of action :(
ME
Malk, I have the plan - 1) Get her to put on a wet suit trousers (but no top) and hide in the pond lying on her back whilst breathing thru a reed like on the movies. 2) She should paint one breast gold / orange and draw a face on it. (like a goldfish) 3) When Mr Hungrysnake comes along she let it go near the new "goldfish" but not bite it :( 4) Grab snake in a net and put it in her handbag. 5) Let it loose at the bingo hall then claim all the prizes

Ferret Master
I have an idea. Get somebody to construct a wire mesh fence with an outwards facing lip surrounding the pond. It doesn't need to be too high but provided it is sunk into the ground a bit then the snakes will not get through. :( Just ensure that it is a small enough gauge to prevent a snake getting half way through and then getting stuck. Wealth of information this forum. I too need a solution. I am still cutting the lawns for my 89 year old grandmother. I have been cutting them since I was 14 and she used to always pay me, up until I was 17. But for the last 20 years she has not paid me- how do I recover the debt? pyr8
must be tiny fish, usually after a big meal the snake sleeps for a couple weeks.you could stick some frogsporn or tadpoles in the pond, grass snakes love frogs.lot easier to catch than fish.
