jordan
Well my new air arms s400 classic arrived this morning after zeroing it in this afternoon went out for a mooch this evening had one rabbit one leveret which i though was a rabbit and a jay now for the stressfull part i was crawling along on my stomache stalking this rabbit when i heard what i thought was thunder i looked up to see 20 bullocks running towards me. i jumped up and ran towards the electric fence went to jump it and caught my ******* bolloxs on it. landed the other side writhing in pain. so you see i may only of had 2 rabbits and a jay but i think i worked hard enough for them
Paul in North Lincs.
Jordon, Do the jays cause problems on your permission Jordon? Just wondered if you had any purpose in shooting it, in the hight of summer? I have shot them on request from keepers in the past, but personaly dont bother nowadays. In fact there arn't so many where I am and I enjoy seeing this colourful cheeky corvid from time to time.
SNAKEBITE
Are the Jays only a threat in the Spring with nesting birds? I have a bit of a vendetta against the Magpies at the moment as I know the damage they can do (Not that they have too much to worry about as I haven't actually got one yet!) Should I let up my campaign and hit them hard in the spring? (That's if I can actually get one)
jordan
as it is mate yes they are causing a problem i got that oen when i was walking round the farm buildings and found 3 of them mobbing a nest full of chicks
deadeye ive
Jordon I own the fac version of this gun and i notice from your picture that the bolt design is still the same.Has air arms modified this to lock down when in the firing posistion or is it like mine(5 yr old) and liable to move so when fired the bolt tends to fly back? PS Good headshot on the smaller bunnie,What distance did you take this shot?
Paul in North Lincs.
Please dont take this as a critism Jordon but unfortunately nature can seem very cruel.. and Jays dining on little birds is all part of lifes rich tapestry..... In my opinion, its not always essential for us to intervene. Much better at times to let nature finds its own balance where possible. Fisherman Mike
The Jay..... a bird of the Ancient Forest. Responsible for propagating the mighty oak woodlands of Europe...Without him we would not have had the great Naval fleets of the 16th and 17th century... Walter would not have brought back the spud nor Columbus Tobacco, ( or was it the other way round) we would not have had the fabulous Tea Clippers of the 18th Century and Franny might just as well have fiished his Bowls. I shoot a couple each year, ( To replenish the fly box ) but I think they will be removed from the General list at some time and I would be quite happy with that. FM. Bloody hundreds around here but if you want to see them get up early.

Teal
I've seen the destructive capabilities of magpies, and recently jays have moved in to one of the areas I shoot. I had heard they were worse than magpies, but after reading the previous comments, is this not the case?
lurcherboy
They are not as bad Teal, but definetly in the same league. LB

SNAKEBITE
I have only seen one jay and that was on the way to my shoot. To be honest I would not take it if I saw it as there can't be that many around. However those *****y magpies, if only I could get a little closer................ blackthorn
try rateling a half tub of pellets you will bring the young magpies to you but not the adults try to mimic the sound they make. film pots makes the best calers Edited July 2, 2005 by blackthorn687
stupidsalmon
Nice rifle those S400's. I have a walnut carbine version (bit easier for stalking round in dense undergrowth than the classic). It'll do you proud.

dunganick
nice ballenced argument there against the magpie, thats what we like to see if you have reason to get rid of them do, no need to kill them for the reason of wanting them dead if they dont do anything
Paul in North Lincs.
Quite right dunganick. Teal.... Corvids by their very nature are all opportunist feeders, and will eat young birds etc. Howver magpies are much more numerous, so effectively they will naturally do more damage. Perhaps there are places in the UK where Jays out numer magpies, whereby the tables would be turned........... but I doubt it very much.
