British bream record smashed

A carp angler has just obliterated the current British bream record with a magnificent fish of 22lb 9oz. That beats the old record, back in March 2005, by 2lb 15oz!

I've just returned from interviewing the angler - Mark McKenna - about the capture. If you fancy watching the videod interview, click HERE.

What a cracking fish, i would love to catch one over 14lb

I love Bream fishing, best day so far was 30 fish in 3 hours, biggest went 11lb 2oz and smallest just over 10lb.

A1 pits, no 4 lake South Muskham Nr Newark, one August evening 2 years ago, the only thing i dislike about them is the snotty mess they make of landing nets, hands, trousers etc, god it stinks.

Some people say they don't fight very well, i have certainly had some screaming runs off these beasties from that lake, i was convinced the runs were from carp as i got smashed off twice, it wasn't until i went to larger mainline and hook lengths that i managed to land them.

well done that man

Impressive fish, although I don't even get them out the water any more. Unhook them at the edge. Cant stand them :hmm: They get in the way of my Carp. No idea what my PB is. Probably 8lb or so.

Never had one fight either. They just scream off, you hook into them and then they die. Never had a fighter.

My son likes them though :lol:bream.gif

Your not likely to have a 'fighter' when your using 2 1/2lb tc rods and 15lb line :hmm:

thats a whacker, several years ago i was a member of the naca syndicate at bawburgh near norwich and saw a 20lb 8 oz bream on the bank, but the guy who caught it didnt want to claim the record or publicize the venue for fear of it being flooded with bream anglers.

My pb is 12lb 2oz from a different lake on the bawburgh complex, i popped it in a sack for a pic in the morning, when i fetched my 2 mates from swims either side to come and see it they each had a bream, mark had a 15lb 11oz and lee had a 16lb 4oz, which made mine look a bit puny in the end.

i used to drive up to south muskham from norfolk every weekend one summer, the carp and bream were huge in the largest lake next to the trent, is that the no 4, i had my best results fishing with the A1 behind me, from memory my best haul for a weekend was about a dozen carp to about 28lb with some bream to about double figures, for what it cost and the fish to be had there was hardly never anyone else on there.

Hi Mikee, No 4 is the fourth on the left as you drive in, the largest pit is pit no 6, which sounds like it is the one you are referring too, when they drained this pit a few years ago they netted all the bream (appx 4 tons) and put them all into pit 4 because the carp lads were complaining that all they were catching were large bream.

I can remember being there on august evening many years ago when a carp lad hooked a very large Bream, he landed it and then just hurled it back into the water in disgust  shouting and screaming obcenities regarding the Breams parentage, that fish looked to weigh about 12lbs, then he hooked 2 more roughly the same size in the next 10 mins while i was there and proceeded to treat them the same. :cry1:

I tried to remind him that you should treat all fish with respect, all i got was foul language, so the next time i saw the bailiff there i reported him.

That is probably what got me into Bream fishing on those lakes, when they start to feed they certainly know how to hoover up, i have never caught one less than 10 lb in weight from pit 4

I must admit i have caught fish from all parts of that lake, the bit nearest the A1 is the deepest, and fishes best in winter, in Summer/autumn time the 1st 2 pegs in the left hand corner nearest the road/ railway always seem to fish the best the best.

There is a plateau under the water there which rises up to about 3--4 ft under the surface, its about 30-4-yds out, you can quite often see the fish stirring the sediment up looking for food on these 2 pegs. its quite good at night with a starlight attached to a float.

I use a medium size method feeder with artificial corn and red maggots on a size 12/14, and just sit and wait for the bobbins to rise or fall :good:
