Billy.
Apparently the BDS are now offering an online DSC course for about £100. Is it really just as simple as that, or do you have to do other stuff? It's really tricky for me to do my DSC, due to work and the fact I am not near any course centres. Thanks. Gully
I run my own business, so couldn't afford to take 4 days off but wanted to get my DSC1 so I could avoid a supervisor condition on my FAC. I bought the book from BDS, pored over it for a couple of months, read all the BDS/DCS factsheets, panicked at the Hygeine part which isn't explained at all, worked it all out in the end and booked the assessment only test. Traipsed over to Norfolk one friday, stood from 8.30 am to 4pm in the p'ing rain on an MOD range watching fellow stalkers not hit a 4" circle from 100 yds, got into my car which was struck by lighning, frying my mobile phone then went to a church hall and waited some more. Eventually they'd given up trying to coach the people at the range who couldn't hit the target and had finally failed them so someone came to give us the written tests. Took the written and visal tests with a couple of others who were assesment only. We all passed, one guy got 100%, I got all the written parts right but got one wrong on the visual. Anyway, we all went away happy. What I'm trying to say is that if you ask BASC or the BDS guys they'll tell you that most people fail assessment only. It is perfectly possible and if you want to do it I can give you the extra material that I got hold of.

fullbore
So how do you do the shooting test online then?
Billy.
So how do you do the shooting test online then? Easy, it's just one of those annoying adverts where it says "SHOOT THE DUCK" or "SHOOT 3 PLAYSTATIONS TO WIN!"

I don't actually see the point in the online learning course - admittedly I've not done it, so I don't actually know what material you have access to, but for £35 you can buy the course manual and if you're determined to do "assessment only" then you can swot up on the book then turn up for the assessment. I'm not sure what the extra £65 gets you??
Dunkield
Distance learning (not sure about long distance learning ) normally means you have access to tutors if you have any queries etc, you wouldn't get that with just the notes. I don't know if that applies here though.
Lancs Lad
I just picked up the DSC1 learning book from the game fair on the weekend. That coupled with the Deer Quest test CD should help. Also combined with being fortunate enough to accompany other shooters on stalks and being taught in the field how to gralloch, the checks etc etc. Fingers crossed, xmas should bring me some enrolment forms for the course............. derek.snr
i did my dsc1 two weeks ago ,iwas directed upto laurie walton at thirlmere in the lakes by the guys at basc.i did my course over two days -one to one ,as i had a problem with work and could only do one weekend.laurie sent me the details and advised me to study the book properly.i have to say i enjoyed the experience, being a novice i thought the way the course was set out was informative and well run by laurie and really enjoyed being in his company.the meat hygeine part was the hardest part to take in ,i dropped one question on that .would i reccomend the course ,yes. long distace learning -yes if you really cannot make the full course, and just want to save the cash. derek.snr
from what i gather ,the visual test can be a problem to many people, the photos in the book are poor to say the least, the ones in the test itself are better but not perfect, plus lets be honest here how many people have had an eye test.
