Rained Off

While I sit here with " Cabin Fever" looking at the rain out of the window the pigeons that frequent my garden are all feasting on the Ivy that I have deliberately grown up the mature Oak trees. They have ignored the bird table offerings left by the squirrels who look literally like drowned rats. So the weekend so far DB had a call in the week from one of our permissions on the extreme of our range, six hundred birds??? so we set out and arranged to meet the farmer at the permission so he could ferry us up the steep climb to the rape. When we arrived he said it was dry enough for us to drive the Disco up and along the tractor tracks in the field and wished us well. We had spotted about two hundred birds in the trees in the lee of the very strong wind,as we approached they flew off . We picked our spot and set up ten on cradles above the rape and two on the magnet. We then had about sixty in the decoys and dropped two, then nothing , by 11.30 we had five birds, so we decided to pack up and look elsewhere. I had been watching a field in the week which had a few birds down and they had not been disturbed so we headed to the field. only to find a 4x4 parked in the gateway . The shooter was set up in the ideal position with a magnet and floaters but the flightline was behind him on the second field of rape also his dog kept pushing the bottom of the hide up to see. We saw him have four decoy shots successfully with his dog recovering well. As the time was getting on we drove to an area which has birds on a few farms, so we had an idea that we would find some sport towards the end of the day as birds return to roost. We eventually found birds down on rape hard against a hedge in the lee of the wind so we set up it was now 14.00 . The wind out in the field was too strong for the magnet so we set it up in the calm air next to the hedge on the rape with a string of fifteen decoys stagered out into the field . The birds could approach from our left but some swung over our heads and approached from over the hedge which helped as if we had shot them over our heads it would have been one kill but as they swung round we would get two to the pattern . We had some frantic shooting at times with DB and I getting birds while the other was just able to reload in time. We shot till 16.00 as the birds kept coming and finished up with sixty three birds down , which was a great result for the day. I believe in karma in respect to what you put into it depends on what you get out of it . We had made the effort to satisfy the Farmer who contacted us but the pigeons did not play ball, in two weeks time when they may start to deflock and pair up it will be a different story. We decide to head back on the assuption that we may intersect some birds going to roost and shot sixty plus, payback.
