It has come time to replace my old beaten up outlander. only reason i was going to keep it was its LPG and cheap to run, but, im tall, the boot is not and in fed up of trying to load deer in to the boot and smacking my head all the time.

Plus there's a P0125 and P0173 fault that i cant find tha cause. Loads of work done on it before hand and loads just done too but the engine management light is on and i can fix it. needs someone that what to find and fix it. might only be a duff lambda sensor.

So, the Outlander is going and i need a cheapish replacement. the outlander i have been getting upto 34mpg on LPG so mid 40mpg if it was petrol equivalent.

need a little height to the replacement. not a truck type if i can help it.

Not a massive budget as its a second motor. upto 4k

4 wheel drive in some way.

automatic is a must

good fuel economy

big enough fo me and a few fallow deer. plus back seats for when kids climb in.

i was looking at

honda cr-v 5door

Rav 4, 5 door

but now thinking Freelander but i keep hearing how pants they are and keep breaking down. ok there's the odd good one but....

question is what to go for? reliable, cheap, good fuel and medium size

Being that tall I'd say forget the CR-V! Lovely car - factory undersealed so absolutely no rust underneath BUT:

I'm 6 feet tall wi long legs and had to fit brackets to shift the driving seat rearward and up a tad, but you'll run out of driving headroom if you do that. In addition the front doors are simply not wide enough for a biggish bloke. Also you might find the rear window above your head as you manoeuvre a deer a bit troublesome.

I got stuck in a field last winter, I think I may have done better wi mud tyres on but bear in mind the rear wheels only drive when the fronts start to lose traction.

The people who I have known with Freelanders always seem to want a lift to or from the garage. For 4000 ish it is difficult and it is also about just how comfortable you want to be.

I am a Land Rover 90 fan through and through. Own a 1989/90 model but upgraded to 3.9 V8 with LPG (30ish mpg) and will be spending a bit on a galvanised chassis come 2017. It is my right arm and does everything I ask of it. One suggestion when it comes to hauling meat, have a look at a carrier to go on your tow bar. They are available commercially I made my own as I have a US square type hitch on mine. I can put a board alongside as a slide and pull a fallow on there no problem, wrap it in a tarp and not blood and mess in the motor ... or ticks and crawly things :-) The problem is Land Rovers, in particularly 90s have increased in price a bit since they stopped making them but you get a big meccano set which you can take to bits and rebuild fairly easily. Any built after about 1992 start to get too refined and have all the trouble causing electronics on them.

I think you would be lucky to find a freelander 2 auto for upto 4 grand ,ive owned one 09 reg auto diesel commercial for 3yrs no more problems than any other 4x4 it helps if your handy on the tools for servicing ,mine has just turned 110, 000 miles and still running nice and is used for all types of shooting off road and it will go where any pick up goes .if you fancy one get one you may not regret it I know I don't ,
