Gun Slip

Quite liked the look of the double slip on Ebay mentioned earlier which got me thinking. I'm having a new gun shortly and have just been told that I may well be getting yet another. Problem is, is that both of these will have 26" barrels. I don't NEED a double, but a splittable one as per the one mentioned wouldn't go amiss. I can't seem to find anything suited to my barrel length. Any ideas, Anyone, please?

Cheers

Buy a double that is for 28" barrels the extra 2" won't be noticeable on use. Most double slips can be parted as they are just buckled together normally.

Yep. Although I'm still looking so far I've only come across 30/32" but the 28" is bound to be there. Don't do t' 'bay so have just gone straight to the makers to see if there's any chance of a 25/26" version. Have found a nice 26" leg o'mutton though but obviously that's a single.

It's a good question. My first sleeve bought over 40 years ago and still going strong (1 new zip) is by Brady made of woolly lined imitation leather with a full length zip. They were available in various lengths (measured as overall length). I bought one to fit my (then) only gun which is (still have it) a 28" barrelled s/s. It works really well and the gun doesn't 'slop about' and it also fits across the boot of my car.

Some time later (still about 30 yeas ago) I was persuaded that 30" and o/u was the way to go - and I bought one - and had to get a new sleeve. Again got one the right length as I had it made to measure by 'Quality Gunslips' in unlined leather with no zip and a buckle down flap. Still got gun and slip - which is light and convenient (unlike the gun!).

Since then I have added hammer guns (30" barrels) and they won't go in the Quality Gunslips sleeve (hammers too tall for a 'slim' slip) - so bought a nylon 30" slip. That's quite good too.

More recently I splashed out on a Croots best grade. I bought a 30" version (which I think is the shortest they do?). Whilst beautifully made of high quality leather, I do have to say that it is heavy and bulky - and even my 30" barrelled guns do 'slop about' quite a bit.

The above are general comments, but the nice snug fit and lack of bulk of the right sized slip I find very desirable.

Precisely. Many thanks.

Thanks also to Mr Merkel - will look into it.

Edit: Damn me, I googled leg o' mutton so that's all that was shown. Turns out to be also made by quality Gunslips.
