  1. Will miss your excellent posts. Have a good break PC Yammas
  2. Like others, I am also sceptical of this claim. If I had shot that number there would be photos to prove it as none of my shooting friends would have believed me without such evidence. Also, my local game dealer and most other pigeon shooters in the area would very quickly become aware of such a feat. Let's see some evidence or just dismiss this as sheer fantasy.
  3. Hi JDog, I am always amazed at the ability of animals, particularly dogs, to self heal. How do they know what to eat ? However, I note that cleavers is known to reduce blood pressure in dogs, so my guess is that they are stressed out with building of the man cave and are suffering from withdrawal symptoms from lack of shooting. What say you ? Regards, Decoyer
  4. I am also very jealous That's a great looking man cave. Glad to see the hats almost taking centre stage. Regrettably, having retired in the last couple of years and having downsized, she who must be obeyed, does not allow me to use the only other spare room as a study and insists it has to be decorated with girlie things so no antlers, wall hanging guns etc for me. The only concessions are a collection of limited edition prints by the likes of Will Garfit (of pigeons, what else) and also some woodcock pin feather paintings by Colin Woolf allowed in the dining room. I have however a large shed/workshop that is totally my domain smelling of gun oil, pigeon feathers everywhere, full of shooting paraphanalia collected over the last 40 odd years and my small collection of traps on the walls. This shed is my chill out area and consequently has a lock on the inside !! My shed is already too small for my current needs and all my 'stuff', so I sincerely hope that your man cave has been constructed large enough for all future acquisitions.
  5. Just seen this post. That's a real talent you have there Dave-UK Absolutely stunning
  6. Hi all, Many many thanks for all your helpful advice. In answer to some of the questions -: Yes Fortune, was Larry Potterfield of Midway USA, Humperdingle, It is for a replacement pad, Mel B 3, many thanks for your kind offer, but I think that I've got a suitable bit of thin leather, just got to get some stain as it's a bit on the light side and needs to be darkened. The Larry Potterfield video gives a good idea how to proceed, so looking forward to having a go. Thanks for all the feedback.
  7. I'm thinking of attempting to add a leather recoil pad onto an old English SxS to increase the LOP. Has anyone ever attempted this ? I've seen a demonstration on Utube by an American gunsmith. They seem to do all kinds of gun smithing jobs, but are really geared up for it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  8. I have had a few singles in my time (spanning 5+ decades !) including a couple of BSA Snipes. They were OK and never had any real problems but the action being aluminium was prone to wear. Also have had an AYA Cosmos, which was semi-hammerles but a really well built gun. Best of all without a doubt was a Greener GP ( although I always thought GP stood for general purpose), well built, British, lasts forever and with records still available, the precise year of manufacture can still be obtained.hold their price well. Thought that I'd add this, for what it's worth.
  9. I for one have been a member for several years now and have received nothing but excellent service and good advice, particularly from Bill Harriman who has guided me on several occasions regarding shotgun certificate renewals and other related subjects. Now that Alan Jarrett is in the chair I have far more confidence in BASC's ability to sustain common sense on the LAG scenario. I was on the point of leaving during the tenure of his predecessor, who has now shown his true colours.
  10. JDog, I had a similar problem after not being able ( for reasons beyond my control) to clean the gun immediately, or at least at the end of the day as is my usual habit. I now keep a can of Beretta bore cleaner handy should this occur again. A good spray and scrub with a bronze brush should clean all fouling quite well. My guns are predominantly older side by sides i.e not chrome lined, therefore take a bit more looking after but I have found this spray very good. I trust and hope that the marks in your barrels are just that and not anything worse, although if not left for very long should only be leading or plastic fouling ( if indeed you use plastics wads!). Hope this helps, but I do sympathise, as it sounds as though you have been most fastidious and prompt in cleaning and obviously take pride like most of us do in our guns. If it is one of the Purdeys, you will of course always have the other one of the pair to use !!! Very best of luck and hope that the barrels are returned to their former glory.
  11. Just to add to what has already been said on this, the screw at the rear of the fences, indicates that it has intercepting sears (these lock the internal hammers when the safety is on as opposed to just locking the triggers and so prevents accidental discharge which can stll happen if the safety only locks the triggers). This is another sign that the gun is of excellent quality over and above the general run of the mill guns made at the time. It would be interesting to see the proof marks to establish the age of the gun. As said previously, James Crockart may be able to assist with the approximate age from some possible records still held by them, as I believe that they were the same company at some time as the name on your gun. Very best of luck with your research of this lovely gun, and of course it will be an absolute pleasure to shoot with suitable cartridges.
  12. Could someone please tell me how I can change my very boring and unimaginative user name into something more appropriate. I was thinking more in terms of BOG (Boring Old ***), Or something similar, as not being exactly in my prime, the words, ancient, old or decrepit, definitely would have to figure somewhere in the title. Having been registered for sometime now, I have been too embarrassed to join in on the great banter that I see on this forum. I am growing a large moustache and have ordered a big hat, but still will not be able to compete with the likes of PC or JDog. However, now that I have mastered the art of signing in to the forum, having many times forgotten my password, and being a complete technophobe and Luddite, I would like very much to join in the banter. I do also shoot a few pigeons, not however in the same league as PC or others on this forum.
  13. Nickbar, Clearly you do not follow PC's most excellent write ups otherwise you would know that very sadly the Dog has gone to his happy hunting ground.
  14. Had mine for some time now, great bit of kit, Not likely to wear out so won't need another just yet ! Many thanks,
  15. Just a correction to my previos post " over and understand" should of course have read "over and unders" Blasted spell checkers. I should of course have read it before pressing the send button, sorry.
  16. If I could just add my two penny worth for what it's worth. I have had a 20 bore CG Ellipse Ltd for about a year now and have never shot better (for me anyway) with any other gun, and just love the looks and the way it handles etc. It was purchased on a PX basis trading in my 20 bore Lincoln Jubilee ( another excellent gun that I shot reasonably well with) through Avalon Guns in Somerset with whom I received brilliant service. Although the CG is secondhand it is in mint condition with 28 inch multi choke barrels. Throughout my shooting life I have shot predominantly with side by sides, mainly 16 bores but have owned a few different over and understand including Beretta 686's in varying grades but have to admit to much preferring the present Ceasar Guerini. The build quality appears as good as Beretta, but of course only time will tell but I have every confidence that it will see me out and handed down to one of my Grandsons. My shooting these days is mainly pigeon shooting, decoying (hence my very boring and unimaginative user name - how can I change it please, perhaps to BOF, Boring Old F--t ?) and roost shooting etc. with walked up game in season. I hope that this helps anyone thinking of buying a CG who currently has doubts. I live in the South East so if anyone wishes to try one out, I would be only too pleased to help.
  17. As a footnote to my previous post, I would encourage anyone wishing to obtain any of Will's books to do so from Will direct as opposed to via a popular website bearing the name of a South American river. It may be cheaper via Axxxxn but there is something special having it personally signed, and it will become, if not already, a collectors item of the future and something, as I intend, to be handed down to grandchildren or youngsters who are, after the sportsmen of the future to ensure continuance of our sport. Will is a very approachable and knowledgeable gentleman who I feel sure will be happy to oblige. Once again, I have not got shares in his work, just a huge fan !!
  18. I wish that I'd chosen mine with a bit more imagination !! Now that I'm a grumpy old ***, can I change it to something more appropriate and original ?
  19. I can fully endorse all the good comments made regarding Will Garfit and his pigeon and other shooting books. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him on the morning prior to his trip to Wales to addresss the GWCT on 1st. May where he afforded me much of his valuable time. Anyone seriously interested in pigeon shooting, and I guess that covers all on this forum, should avail themselves of at least 'Will's Pigeon Shooting' if not all of his excellent books. Will is a perfect gentleman , excellent shot, humourous raconteur, wonderfully talented artist and is obviously passionate about pigeon shooting. He also has some brilliant limited edition prints of his work, particularly pigeon shooting related, as well as prints and originals in sepia and oils of his other work. I now have a couple of his pigeon related limited edition prints and will continue to obtain more in due course. They are great reminders of pigeon shooting to look at when not out in the hide. Please note that I have not got shares in his art work or books, but am just a fan !! Anyone buying any of his books or artwork will not be disappointed. Chris S
  20. I took delivery of the Begara folding seat from Pigeon Watch about 4 months ago and it has changed my decoying enormously in that I no longer get an aching back after a day out. Being in my autumn years, this became a problem to me.(poor old ***** I bet you're thinking!)The backrest is just what was needed. Having taken note of comments and agree that the seat part could be more comfortable, I use the top of an ordinary spinning bucket seat which fits on it just right.and give extra padding. Again if the instructions are read first and a drop of oil put on the adjusting buttons, everything works, adjusts and takes apart etc. so easily. This is definitely the best seat that I have ever owned or tried, and I have not got shares in the manufacture of them, mores the pity ! Many thanks
