What do you think? (There should be an image below) It's a dogs life, eh?

    Avatars

You learn something new every day! Like my new avatar?
  4. Shooting Pigeons by John Humphries ISBN 0-7153-9101-1, covers all the basics.
  5. I'm not sure if it was a juvenile, but I shot a very thin woodpigeon at the weekend. It had neck bars but no meat on it. Otherwise it was in prime condition.
  6. I agree, although I,m not one to stand in the way of "progress", I'm not sure all these new devices amount to "progress". For instance, will the day come when the countryside is littered with spinning, bobbing, flapping, swooping machines every saturday and sunday? If the day came when it was common-place to see these machines, would that be a good thing? Let's face it, a good days pigeon shooting can be had with the minimum of technology and all the "machines" are not a necessity....... Or are they?
  7. While shooting today nearby a rape stubble field, we saw very heavy pigeon activity. Several hundred birds down at any one time. They were moving in and out of the field via several very clear strong flightlines and in flocks ranging from 1 to about 50. Unfortunately, we didn't have permission on that land and were confined to taking only a few stragglers from a field further down one of the flightlines. Nightmare!
  8. Went out shooting with Dan today and I though I'd be clever and show him the "Vulcan" way. Found the spot, heard the crunch, bird very much not dead. I necked it promptly. Very embarassing.
  9. I remember the WAGBI Seamark flapper. BASC may still sell them.

Thanks for that and please bear with me. More questions to come, no doubt.
  11. I went to a Wildlife Park with the family a few weeks ago and took the video camera. When I copied the tape a few days ago my wife was a bit angry (but not surprized) to find that I had extensive footage of a group of woodpigeon grazing the clover in the Rhino enclosure. :( She forgave me though! And yes I know I'm sad!

And the the great grey plastic gutter decoys!
  13. I remember that time too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :(

Highdowns, I had some cardboard decoys "many moons" ago. They worked well! I think they would work today too. Maybe...... we could have a little competition. See who can decoy a pigeon with the most unlikely "decoy".
  16. How do I put little pictures and other images next to my name when posting and how can I add images in posts? When I click on the "Image" icon it says add url or something? What? Computers are so annoying! :(

I do not use one. They work, but, not wanting to seem arrogant or anything, I honestly don,t need one. Also, I carry enough kit with me already without anything else.
  18. Beam me up Scotty! The Vulcans are invading!

    CLA game fair

Went to CLA today. Got a sun tan and a new titfer. Didn't think much to the pigeon shooting equipment on sale, in fact a lot was over priced. (Might be the Yorkshire in me!) Poor selection though, not as good as the Midland.
  20. I must admit, it does take a bit of practice. I can't really expand on my earlier description. Several of my friends use this technique which, is affectionately known as the "Vulcan death grip". (And no, I am not a Star Treck fan!)
  21. I went out yesterday afternoon and it was very quiet so I went home for something to eat, then returned to the field at about 6-30pm. I shot about 25 in an hour and I missed loads of others. They were still coming in as I collected my decoys so I think if I had stayed I may have got a few more. There was a marked difference in activity between afternoon and early evening.
  22. I shot about 25 yesterday, only 1 young 'un and its neck marking had just started to show.
  23. I had a look and it seems quite comprehensive with loads of pages. I'm not quite sure that I agree with you about the prices though, the rotary devices are a bit steep.
  24. Dead-eye, I think you need to keep watching those pigeons because they do follow regular flight lines. This is the reason we are able to shoot them, ie, by decoying close to a flightline we can attract them away from their route and within range of our guns. If there is no flightline then you will not bag many, if any! :( Maybe you are looking for flightlines on land across which there are no flightlines running (at the moment).
  25. I wonder if a small solar panel could be used instead of a battery. Anyone know anything about solar panels?
