what cartridges for pigeon
Dr_T replied to hutchie the black hunter 1's topic in Bullets, Cartridges and Reloading
I use Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30g No.6's in fibre wad. For flighting and the longer shot I use 34g No.5 Pigeon Extreme. -
Thanks for the tip. Indeed, I had the rods in a protective plastic tube but the top had come off! I think I might take your advice and use some copper tubing and blank end-caps. A trip to the builder's merchant me thinks
-
I would recommend a stealth ghost net and 4 hide poles plus 10+ flocked half-shells (plus spring sticks) for starters.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have ordered some 1.2mm and 1.5mm diameter rods from fleabay. The cheapest option is to buy some rods for float fishing construction. Come in multiples of 5 or 10. I'll either use Rawl plugs (smallest size) inserted into the wing end flaps or use heat-shrink to cap the rod ends. I'll report back once I have tried these out.

Thanks for the tip. The main reason for sourcing cheap lengths of rod is that I can see this happening in the future. Hence I would like to have a few in reserve. I'll check out some model hobby shops.

Need some help Gents. I've lost three of my hypaflap rods! Does anyone know where to order on the web a cheap length of rod to cut to length. I need both the thin and the wider types. Many thanks.

electronic ear defenders advice please

I also highly recommend the MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X's. I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago with the gel ear seals. Pricey but very good. -
Wearing a face veil in this recent heat is somewhat uncomfortable - too hot and sweaty for my liking. Also I'm not seeing many pigeons out in this heat either!

Welcome to PW. Enjoy!

I bought my Silver Pigeon III from Fenland. I found them very knowledgeable. Recommended.

shotgun laws bound to be tightend because of 1 man

A big thanks from me also. Keep up the good work. Other gun owners should show their support too. -
I'm new to decoying too. I went for 4 poles and a stealth net. Rotary with hypaflaps plus 10 flocked half shells. Set-up working well so far. Invested in some cradles recently since the crops are getting taller.

I have one of these. No problem with mine. Height is just right as well!

Thanks for the tips. I'll report back once I have had some practice. I hope I don't swallow the dam thing with the recoil of the shotgun!

Just ordered one from corvussam on *bay on the glowing reports here.

Barrels up until I read this thread! Now barrels down

Good to hear from a fellow local shooter!

As a newbie I'm still building up experience decoying with each outing. On average, what is/are the best time(s) of day to decoy for pigeons over crops? I've heard early morning and late afternoon/evening. Is this correct? Thanks.

I always carry my SGC and insurance with me. Sometimes I notify the Police of my location too if close to footpaths, cycleways etc..

Welcome. Where are you based?

No Luck today on peas. No birds in the air or feeding. Had a passing jackdaw only. Last week was similar: 4 pigeons, 2 jackdaws and a crow. When will they start hitting this crop?

Try googling 'laser rangefinders' I have a Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout I bought years ago. I use it for decoying to gauge the kill zone -45 yards and closer. Saves on the guesswork. They are not cheap though.

Well, used the rotary and new hypa flaps yesterday on peas. Within minutes it was bringing them in! Even a passing cyclist (on a path behind me over a ditch) commented how life-like they were! Because of the proximity to the cycle path I notified the local Police, giving them my OS grid reference location. I was impressed overall with their performance and the rotary was still going strong after six hours using a 7ah battery. My position wasn't the best (no foliage behind me) and the wind kept moving the hide poles! I need to take guy ropes next time! Cheers.

I use 30g No.6's (Clear Pigeon fibre) in my 12gauge if decoying on 1/4 and 1/2 choke. Good out to 45yards. Maybe 32g No 6's for flighting and roost shooting.
