I would ask for 222 or larger and .17HMR and .22, all with moderators. Be sure to ask for expanding and solid ammunition as some authorities are funny about what you can have, I was with the Met but am now with Essex, the Met would not allow solid or ball, but Essex have allowed me both Once you have your ticket I would buy a .17HMR, have a play with that and then you will be more able to decide whats best for you. This is very accurate out to 150 yds even with a bit of wind, and in ideal conditions will go out further. Look at this site http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm I only have a .17HMR and two .22's, I shoot on 1200 acres but would not be happy using anything stronger than a .17HMR. Your land may have huge back drops and V large fields which would suit a hot far reaching round, I find the .17 does 200yd clean kills, and the .22 is great for silence. I had trouble getting one of my expanding bolts to grip, I cleaned the hole out and pumped some No Nails in, then stuck the Raw bolt in and Hey Presto I will never get it out again though

I have a single barrel .410 that I have made a moderator for, I use it when I do not want to annoy my land owners neighbours with a noisey 12g. In saying that there is little difference between a 12 and a .410 if they are both standard, .410 cartriges are more expensive than 12g. its best benefit to me is that its so light, great for walking the dogs.

I am not sure about the " P O P " When I accidently fried a 12g cartrige it went " BOOM " When your sat in your front room cuddling the missus, sneak one into the fire, then sit back relax and wait. I can assure you it will make more than a PoP, probably sweep your flue to the bargain

It does not matter how you pay, just take care of your receipt, in fact take care of all your paperwork when dealing with the Police. I am not sure if you get your fee returned on an unsuccessful application, just ask them most are very helpful. Good luck

The only time I have seen one go off outside of a barrel was when one got cooked in a fire, we were burning rubbish which had a bag of empty cases. One live must have got overlooked, bloomin scared the life out of me. Other than that I think they are pretty safe when handled with care

I hate to say this but most ammunition we use is made by the same company, http://www.atk.com/Customer_Solutions_Ammu..._as_default.asp I think that with the current state of world affairs a lot of plants in the US are being turned over to military prodution, I am guessing but I think that all other munitions will be farmed out to poorer quality plants such as IMI who manufacture such delights as Sampson which is the worst ammo I have ever used. I think we can brace ourselves for some poor quality rounds appearing over the next few months, Gloom :blink:

I have made my loft into a nice little sanctuary, its boarded out with the safe bolted to the chimney breast. A shotgun ammo safe bolted to the top of the safe, I have put in a work bench and love escaping up there for a quiet cleaning session.

My vote is for CZ American 20" barrel, screw cut. Tuned trigger, modified SAK moderator, bloomin big Swarvo scope. You can not go wrong :blink:

I had some grim problems with a Ruger not so long back, it would not hold a zero at all and drove me up the wall. A good mate of mine who is in the trade and knows a lot with regard to Gun smithing advised me to first check the obvious, then check that the barrel was fully floating ( It was not ) and if all that failed it would more than like be the crown that was botched due to barrel shortening, I do not fully understand this but if the end of the barrel is not set just so, the rifle is not going to shoot a good group. I was lucky that my fault was a barrel that was clamped against the wood work, an easy fault to fix, if you are thinking of getting a barrel shortened I would recommend that you get a chap who knows what he is doing, ask around!!

I fully agree with you paul, the gasses are all burnt in the first nine inches of barrel with most .22LR cartriges. So moderator screw cutting will NOT affect the proof of a barrel with this caliber, but you could not sat the same for .338 mag so what would you suggest as a cut-off point??? I was shown a barrel that was poorly threaded, resulting in the moderator being scew wiff on the barrel. This resulted in the blast hitting the side of the can and bellowing it out, the back pressure is much higher with a moderator on. In my opinion and I really can not stand the big brother thing, proofing is a must for me, to protect those who can be maimed by people who take the " P " To proof a moderator is £15, they check an awful lot for that money, its well spent in my opinion.

I have talked this over with the London proof House, and there opinion is that if the barrel has been altered in any way it WILL have to be re proofed. This includes moderators for both rifles and shotguns, there reason behind this. Where do you have a cut off point? Where do you say " Oh that will be ok?". So the safest way forward is to DEMAND a Re proof for any modefecation, after all its about safety. It is an offence to sell or give any firearm to another for use, that has not been correctly proofed.

You will need a shotgun that proofed for the load, and the barrel MUST be improved or true cylinder. That is NO choke at all, this information is writted clearly on the side of the box, its the slug cartridge thats sect 1 not the shotgun, as far as I know the only way you can get these on a ticket is practical shotgun. You can use an unproofed moderator on a firearm, but you can not sell an unproofed moderator that is to be used on a firarm. So if your RFD sells you a moderator that you " SAY " is to be used on an air gun then thats fine if you later place it on a firearm, but you MUST have it on your ticket!! That is to say if you are stopped by the boys in blue using a firearm that has a moderator attached then you must be authorised to possess it on your FAC, but should you attemp to ask for a T8 or other full bore moderator to put on your air gun you will be told NO!! RFD's can not get away with selling these as an air gun moderator, its similar with possession on the street, should you get stopped with a small moderator such as a SAK or ASE ultra and you have no firearms cert stating that you can possess such an item, then you can state that its for you air rifle and you will be ok, you will not get away with this if you have a bloomin great full bore can. Sounds daft I know but there is a grey area around this bit of firearms legislation,

Kip is right in my opinion, I do not like head shots that much as I have to shoot my rabbits at about 100m, a rabbits brain is not very big, we are talking a large hazel nut. I will not sulley these forums with tales of maimed animals, but a good heart lung shot is a much safer and therefore humane option that a head shot. You have to hit the brain or spine to outright kill any animal, can you hit a large Hazel nut every time at 100m Of course you all can, I had better learn to shoot properly, B)

I have tried the supposed subsonic superquiet Eley's, but if I were you I would stick to 2 1/2 regular cartriges. They have always been the quitest for me.
