  1. hi salopian sorry i cannot be of any help , on the subject of loading for the 28 bore , i myself only reload for 12,bore 410 and .222 rifle . i can however help if anyone wants some data on nobel 80 and 82 powders ( not a great amount but they could help someone out ) in 4,8.10,12,16,20 bores that i got from david garrard many moons ago they are also INCLUDED in his book :CARTRIDGE LOADING ISBN 0 85242 659 3 thats if the book is still in print though if anyones interested as some people still seem have stocks of nobel 80 & 82 powders on hand (lucky lucky people lol ) , so on the subject of sharing prices on powder i,ll throw my hat in the ring and say that the cheapest places i,ve found so far for vectan A1 & AS are clayandgame and shotgunreloading @ £39.00 and £38.00 per kilo respectively ,peter lawman is undoubtly the cheapest but thats if you can get in touch with him of coarse . andy

    Brian May

brian may should spend a bit of time on a farm and see first hand the effects of having a cow in the herd react after a TB test and then put up with the aftermath , the restrictions , the standstill orders , the re tests , the mountian of paperwork ,etc , i, ve seen the results and its not a nice thing to witness , no doubt he has not got a clue though if that badger has a right to life what about that poor cow that provides his daily pint on the door step in the morning on his cornflakes or if he,s not a veggie his sunday roast as usual another celeb with a waneing career looking to boost their popularty with the masses , does he not know THAT T.B IS A KILLER UP UNTILL THE 1950S T.B WAS INFACT ONE OF THE BIGGEST KILLERS IN THE UK POPULATION , as usual a celeb with no idea what he,s saying , please brian stick to your music and your telescope, i,d have thought with all the problems in the world at the moment with fammine and wars why could,t you have found a greater cause than this , andy
  4. please correct me if my maths is wrong but that works out at £ 57.60 a kilo thats way to dear for me too , £ 39.00 a kilo and thats including VAT at clayandgame when i enquired this afternoon , but thanks for the enquiry anyway andy
  5. anyone got one and or reloads for one , to take on the odd outing for clay or game , i,ll bet that would ruffle a few feathers on the local clay shoot i,m sure lol , being blackpowder and all , but seriously does anyone shoot one andy
  6. fine thanks yeah your right if i did not reload for it then i could not afford to shoot it , sold my 410s back 3 years ago , then looking through my ammo cabinet last week i found some winchester AA cases i reloaded back a few years ago , so i turned the insert the other night and it was a reasonable job , and works quite well ,so i,ll have to reinstall my 410 die set back in the mec 600 jnr when i,ve used what i,ve got loaded . andy
  7. how are you sparkie not if you reload for it 1lb of alliant 2400 @12.5 grains and 1/2 oz of shot for a 410 and it will keep you going for years.
  8. i know that quite a few of us UK (myself included in the not to distant past) shooters have bought all size dia bullets direct from suppliers in the states , simply because we could buy cheaper from the USA ( not so now ) or simply cant get them here in the UK but have any of you tried to buy reloading brass stateside , YOU CANNOT no american supplier will send reloading brass overseas, though strangly they will send brass shotgun magtec cases overseas apparently it has something to do with the american state dept placing trade export liecences on U S suppliers wishing to send rifle and pistol brass overseas which as you can imagine is very expensive propostion so that is why US suppliers wont send overseas unless that ruling has been recently changed in the last 3 months then i will stand corrected though the ruling was being challenged in the US courts so the moral to my thread on swaging , is that some time in the possible future bullets will be the next componant that will become restricted from being sent overseas , unless your an importer of coarse then you can hike the price ( just look at the prices at ****** uk not the cheapest place now imagine it in the future an eye watering prospect indeed ) then the proverbial **** will hit the fan and those £ 14.00 per 100 bullets that someone kindly pointed out eariler ( which i can see where he is coming from ) will treble in price , then how many of us could afford to carry on shooting , makes you think eh the purpose of my thead was to make people aware there may be another way to still shoot if the unthinkable happens in the future even though some people may well disagree with the question , the purpose behind the thread ,still remains would it be viable , maybe , maybe not , who knows it remains to be seen ( forget the corbin website for buying equipment but its usefull as it describes the basic,s behind the art of bullet swaging ) i totally respect everyones got a view on the issues of swaging bullets (not just the swaging of .224 bullets but other callibres as well ) is not everyones cup of tea ,but many of you will have to agree that where america leads the rest of the world will eventully follow so in the future it may well become the one way to keep shooting in the uncertain times in which we are living and the ever increasing price rises ( copper ,lead ,petrol , and the next big hike cereals your family loaf and your pint down the local with rise in price before christmas belive me ) that are affecting every accepect of our daily lives , these are just my personal views and i,m not endorsing any company connected to selling swaging equipment .or trying to influence anyone into swaging its that this is a reloading forum and as such is a valid question to ask reloading forum . andy
  9. i was refering to using fired r/f cases and not pulling bullets from loaded rounds to use the case , sorry if i gave the impression that i was encourging anyone to pull bullets from rimfire cases , no,no,no not with a loaded r/f case and on no accounts to use a kinetic hammer to unload rimfire ammo i just want to clear that up before that impression goes any further .
  10. thank you dicehorn, that bit took about an hour and half to type , lol
  11. has anyone made a sub calibre insert as the yanks call them to use in their 12 bore , i turned one the other night in .410 to use in an old 12 bore o/u that i have ( they could be made in 20 bore and 28 bore i suppose ), and it patterns suprising very well at 25 yards , well the squirrals dont think a lot of it anyhow took out 5 yesterday mild report , half the shot , half the powder , 2 bore sizes 1 gun simples regards andy
  12. oops sorry about the typo at the end of that post andy
  13. how many egss are you thinking of setting is the first question to ask unless you are setting your own eggs or got a plentifull supply that are really really cheap , then dont even think of risking them in a homemade incubator , save your money and buy a brinsea ova - easy 380 incubator ( others may well dissagree ), granted they are expensive but once you get the hang of them they are a fantastic machine , before i sold mine ealier this year , i hatched well over 3000 light sussex x rhode island red eggs , 200 embdem goose eggs , 300 wild american turkey eggs , 2000 quail eggs , 1000 red leg partridge eggs ( i used to hatch and sell locally ) with my machine , you can recoup the cost of the machine in a season regards andy with various tweeks here and there and good breeding stock i was getting 87/89 % hatch rate in mine try getting rates like that in a homemade machine you you will fail big time and with the cost of hatching eggs now that kind of faliure is not an option

    Homebrewing

sorry if i,ve posted in the wrong place so mods feel free to post in the right place , does anyone run a cornielius keg setup for their brews , i,ve got five corni kegs and i,m having trouble with 1 of them leaking slightly on the poppit valve, i have renewed the seals on it but it still wants foam slightly for some reason when you disconnect the beer out pipe on it , if you flick the poppit vavle for a couple of minutes after disconecting it eventually stops foaming but its starting to become a real pain , would anyone know the reason why apart from this 1 keg leaking slightly i can highly recomend a corni keg setup to anyone , vastly superiour to a plastic keg (i think if my memory serves me right corni kegs run at a pressure of 100 /120 psi ) so produces a beautifull pint depending on your recipe they produce a pint on a par to what you buy in the pub i do all grain now and then but there again a good beer kit ,muntons ,edme woodfords etc ,really does inprove in the corni kegs and is miles ahead of bottling but that my own personal view others might tend disagree , i,m currently running, yorkshire bitter , irish stout , porter , oktoberfest lagar , english style pale ale ( all my own all grain recipes ) and they are all spot on and the corni kegs are the reason why andy
  15. from what i,ve read on the subject by the time you clean and anneal your fired r/f cases the jacket is very soft indeed , try it for yourself anneal a r/f case they will deform with slight finger and thumb pressure so i cannot see any issue with barrel wear , and besides i,m not looking to produce anything that rivals comercially made bullets as long as they can match a commercial made one then thats fine with me , prices for bullets are only going to go up my friends , i know that a lot of people would not be interested in swaging so the thread is aimed at those of us who are many american shooters will tell you that they are having problems in the states buying reloading componants ( simply look on nosler , barnes , sierra etc etc websites and a good majority of .224 bullets are unavaiavble ) so thats one of the reasons why a lot of american shooters are hoarding what they can buy , ( .224 bullets and primers and powders are prime examples of what are being hoarded at the moment ) and thats why a lot of them are starting to swaging there own , with 90 % of reloading componants we use here in the uk coming from the us manufactures anyway , so if the shortages in the american domestic market contiune , then we simply will not have any chance of getting componants , so that was reason for the question in the first place , and besides i like the challanges that this kind of thing presents , and the satisfaction of droping that fox in his tracks with a swaged bullet that you made , priceless regards andy
  16. all of the swedish rolling block black powder rifles i have seen , husquvarna made rifles in particluar used birch for their stock blanks , and some finnish /russian made mosin nagants are birch stocked as well i think . look on the bright side if it does not work you end up with fire wood AND WELL SEASONED BIRCH DOES THROW OUT A HELL LOT OF HEAT .LOL regards andy
  17. hi can anyone tell me if there are any legal issues in buying a set of .224 bullet swaging dies from the usa and swage your own bullets from .22 r/f cases , bearing in mind that some of the bullets you can produce would be classed as expanding missiles which is what i would be interested in producing how would you stand with the powers that be in your local firearms dept , at the moment the only thing putting me off buying a set is the cost of the dies , and if there are any legal issues of producing your own expanding missiles in the uk the american shooters i,ve spoken to on american websites who produce their own swaged .224 bullets claim execellent results in .222 and .223 amminiution as i would be interested in doing 55 grain expanding bullets for my .222 rifle and because my rifle loves 55 grain pills regards andy
  18. slightly going of topic , if you are using quail eggs , boil them and let then cool , then place the cool eggs in a bowl then pour over white vineger completely covering the eggs and leave overnight , then in the morning the shells will have disolved of the eggs leaving only the membrane, to be peeled off , hey presto , as quail eggs are a ****** to shell if you have any quantity to prepare andy
  19. tap some sycamore trees at the begining of march , then boil down the sap , makes a good maple syrup substiute , suprinsingly makes a very sweet and tasty syrup , only problem is though you will need about 50 to 60 gallons of sap though to make any quantity though LOL . andy

    winberrys

hi anyone having any luck with picking winberries this year , where i am in south wales , its a dreadfull year. on friday evening i only managed to pick 3/4 of of a pound in 3 hours , this time last year i was picking 22lbs in three hours , what a difference a year makes , last year in 10 days i managed to pick 120 lbs , is it the weather or have the pigeons beaten me to it , because when they first started to come out at the begining of june there seemed to be an abundance of them , but know they are very few and far between . regards andy
  21. so are vectan powders in short supply then , i got the impression there was a plentyfull supply
  22. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM BY ROYAL MAIL if memory serves me right they have to be labeled up AMMUNITION CLASS 6 DIVISION 1 SAFETY CARTRIDGES NOT LIABLE TO EXPLODE IN BULK , this was the advise given to me by david garrard many years ago when i was in touch with the great man himself on the subject of sending cartridges for proof testing , though things may well have changed now . they will have to be sent by carrier and i think only TNT will accept and deliver them for you , but when you add the cost of delivery on top will it be worth it , i suspose it depends on the ammount being sent of coarse . regards andy
  23. hi to all i ,ve only just registered on the forum , but have been following various topics on pigeon watch for some time now especially the thread on homemade shot , so i thought it was time i joined up as they say i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction ( or had any data they were willing to share ) on the question of reloading using vectan powders , as a one fingered wonder on a keyboard i,m having trouble finding vectan loading data i was looking to use vectan A1 and AS powders to reload 28 gram and 32gram 12 bore cartridges using current production wads and cheddite cx2000 primers in old style eley olympic trap cases which are P/T cases on a MEC 650 loading press i have just used up the last of my green dot , red dot , and unique powders so at nearly 40,00 quid a pound to replace the alliant powders ,and with vectan powders currently running at 38.00 quid a kilo for A1 & AS there is no comparrison, so i,d like to give vectan a try who is th e best firm to buy the powder from , forget peter lawman ( i,d have more chance of an audiance with the pope ) than catching mr lawman i,ve still have had no success after 3weeks of phoning and emailing so it seems that its either clayandgame or shotgunloading.co.uk i started loading my own back in 1984 when i bought a second hand hornady pacific 366 auto machine complete with 20 powder bushings 6 different shot bushings ,10,000 mk2 and mk3 plaswads , 4lbs of nobel 80 powder in the tin cans ( how times change ) , 350lbs of no 7 shot , 5000 empty eley olympic trap cases and 1000 winchester 209 primers , five boxes of clays and some other bits and bobs for an eye watering £ 150.00 a lot of money back then for a sixteen year old forestry worker on 40.00 quid a week . my dad went bonkers when he found out how much i paid for it all ,its a complete waste of money boy , he said to me , and besides where in the hell did you get that kind of money from in the first place (this was a couple of months into of the miners strike and time were tough,) though he didnt mind using them himself though for the crows and magpies durring lambing time , with the remark jesus christ those cartridges bowl those bloody crows over dont they .i was as pleased as punch with that remark . regards andy
