Lloyd Look at planting - if that is what you are to do - native species Dog woods / hazels / black thorn / haw thorn / dog rose/ holly/rowan - if you want cover and habitat Lonicera is a chinese species so is sub optimum and should not be encouraged What we have done in various areas of the woods is clear areas of between an acre or two and plant game strips / wild bird strips in them
-
I think 120 acres is a good size for a shoot scolopax Nice and manageable
-
You have a large shoot at circa 2000 acres - we have more land available than we use but its very easy to spread yourself too thin too
-
It really really does not have to be so I get the beaters , pickers up , wives and girlfriends involved. Feeding on your own can take take a full 2days to get round - 9.10 helpers and its a couple of hours Making the effort to show people the way things work and getting them involved does really work Granted you will not drag everyone along but as your success increases you will find so does your help

Where was this Harry ?

Not sure what you mean " I shoot ....."
-
A hide is good but i shoot many dozens simply sat in the landrover from the wing mirror Well played - its some of the most enjoyable shooting there is - lots of watching and learning of how the whole environment functions
-
I think the thing doing it yourself - with your own syndicate is that you see so much more than just shooting Th opportunity to increase biodiversity and leave a real legacy is something really worth grasping and never letting go
-
I thought of something similar - but with the funds renting / leasing ground long term The benefit to the landowner is an income for 20/30 years - the money would go far further Whichever group or organisation took it on could then increase bio diversity and "sell" points to the environment banks win / win ?

I think the thing with feeders is put them in clusters where the birds want to be Ie - near cover crops / flushing points / water sources / bird seed rides We only use circa 150 acres of our 270 acres and we keep our birds very well Only at the end of the season do we then spread the feeders out into breeding territories

Yes i have Keep going ! Try and keep the people involved so they feel part of a community i have regular team bonding days/ nights - from a day at the football to a night bowling or a morning counting wild birds and erecting bird boxes to hedge planting When i do something positive i highlight this to the other members and they now appreciate and indeed wholly support me

Good man Your shoot sounds a little like ours was a few years ago where previous members had got stuck in a rut a little We have gone from shooting twenties to a constant 100/120 I fortunately have now brought a few of the old members with me on our journey and i wish you well too
-
We will perhaps achieve - 55 / 60 % this year on the pheasants and 50 % on our partridge ( we could easily do more but i have 2 covey of grey that we released and wont now shoot ) One of the keys to our success has been the use of supplementary feeding of sunflower seeds into the game crops and on rides / flushing points I hand feed these a couple of times a week - the birds love it and dont wonder a great deal I also built various small water sources / splash ponds and these are simply magnets for game and wildlife

Sorry to hear this guys We are having our best season in 30 years ! Its all about habitat / feeding and protection I agree with lots of Jim Neals thoughts but if i lost that number of birds to disease i would not consider that sustainable I would even go as far as suggesting too high a stocking density promotes disease and surely re-stocking the same pen with more birds after such large losses may not be the best solution
-
The tail feathers will have come out because the mature birds will be moulting now Blood on the bums of the poults usually indicates too high a stocking density / not enough cover in the pen regards
