I would have to argue against that unless you have a massive number of traps down and are doing it full time, if you've got reds then you can only use live catch traps. We are having good success bringing squirrels to feeders and shooting, this is working in the lakes in Anglesey and other areas around the country, you will struggle to find two squirrels near my house where twelve months ago they were everywhere, I've shot more than I've trapped.

I see my apologies, only problem with trapping is its so time consuming, how many people can check traps twice a day?

Think he means the forestry commission, their website says they control grey squirrels as part of a management program but not heard of anyone being given permission to shoot or trap on their land.

Today up at 0430 and at the wood for 0530. Timing was good but rain when I left was not promising. Then as dawn approached it the rain stopped and i began to think the effort might be worth it.
In the wood and I am the quietest, slowest person ever to walk through there. Looking, more than walking, along one of the old tracks. After about 50m A movement catches my eye and a doe Munty comes into view at about 25m. I can barely breath as i lift the rifle and she disappears into the undergrowth. I rest the rifle on the sticks hoping to see her appear further back in the wood, when just behind her a buck comes into view. He stops and looks at me, barely 20m away, and about 1m below me. I slip the safety and he drops where he stood.
What had been so hard now looks to be not so difficult after all.
Persuaded by my shooting mate to keep it for the freezer, I have just processed it. Don't think I want to do another, it did not want to part with its fur coat.
The first of a few, I hope.
I had seen the picture but still held my breath ?? well done.

I shall be building a large shed soon and an laying a full on concrete base! The idea is, the shed will double as a garage for the caravan, and be a workshop!
so where are you going to put all the stuff when try and put the caravan away for winter.

just remember things can get under your shed if you use sleepers, sounds like a good idea just make sure a terrier can fit.
joist hangers are good and not that dear, i would use them if you do a frame.

might also be worth asking your local gun shop to chrono the rifle for you, give you an idea if it has enough power to shoot the rabbits.

Been on cnc lathes all my years and i can only just grind a drill to cut size ? the thought of someone with a hand drill near a gun barrel makes me shiver, pillar drill with the barrel clamped sounds less scary.

can't plant in the ground as its all tree roots where its going so everything will have to be in containers or grow bags.

Falconry sounds similar to stalking from reading your replies, i did a falconry experience years ago in Scotland probably 6 of us paying £100 a pop lots of talk and not much going on.
I asked if we were going to fly a hawk at pheasant as they were everywhere, o no that would cost us money? It was supposed to be a hunting experience but we ended up by a massive old rabbit warren me five townies and the fella in charge of the Harris hawks who wasn't really interested. We saw two bunnies bolt with the hawks missing.
I had another session with a local guy for my 40th, that was just an experience not hunting but it was loads better, I've always been a hawk fan but seeing him flying his falcon to the lure!! Just wow.
check what your getting for your money or have a google for local groups, you may just be able to go along and see what happens?

Shoot rabbits, squizzers, magpies, rats, muntjack, fox, canada geese, pheasant and duck when in season, but don't shoot the hares ok, why not the hares l ask, because the members like to see them running about, fair enough.
Plus the bird life is fantastic when your laid up waiting for a shot with too many species to name.
l can sit there for hours without a care in the world, charge them l don't think so.
The only bugbear is those idiots who turn up to wack a ball about at silly o'clock in the morning when you're having a good session.
Are you sure its a golf course not a private estate ?

Simple enough but I'm still checking.
I'm putting a green house in the garden amongst some trees so guaranteed to get a branch through the roof but there you go.
My plan is 6*2 frame put down some weed sheet stuff then hard core and whack it, then put flags on the hardcore.
Anything I'm missing?

we are the dirty secret Bruno and you know it. Conservationists often don't like the idea these days that to protect one spieces you have to control another, grey squirrel / red squirrel or mink / water vole.

where i grew up was by a lake and this was a common sight watching them chase each other away from their nest or territory, always found it strange how they didn't chase mallard away? Must just be a coot thing.

your doing well if you've got rabbits to shoot never mind getting paid as well, unless your a pest controller and its your job.
I've only shot on one golf course, i did get asked if i wanted my ammo paying for but said no thanks just happy to have permission.

Obviously you can feel the trigger but would a less exaggerated curve not be better? Looks like you would have room.

Second decided to play a "Whack a Mole " type game with me by sitting on the blind side of the Hopper where I could only see the front half of his head as he leant down to grab a peanut but he had it in his mind to pop his head up occasionally to look around - on the fifth occasion his mind became splattered on a branch just behind him and he fell without any complaints at all. Home at 9:30 and after informing the Boys in Blue I sent a txt to the man moaning that 2 Hoppers were needing attention - got a reply at 11:15 saying that both had been sorted and filled - hard life eh!! Total this season for the owners is now 45.
Whack a mole ? that's what the rat was doing to me yesterday.

The guy on Facebook is Suburban shooter he's on here as well, but log your squirrels on here as well, the aim is always to shoot/ trap more than the previous year keeping the pressure on the greys and limiting there spread especially in areas with reds ?

would the .25 calibre not be more in demand than changing it to .22 either keep it that way for the rats or flip it on for a profit?

Thanks sciurus i missed this earlier. I only normally get out once a week but thanks to my shifts i can sometimes go after work as well. Fisher UK is out several times a week and has been for years. Between three of us a small patch with confirmed reds is being kept on top of, trapping doesn't take place because of the time scale.
