slingshot
i Have a lightning xl .22 recently purchased on here from Mark (markio) and as oneshotkiller says with a strip polish and proper lube and you have a winner with AA field 16 grn i can easy clover leaf with 5 shots standing at 25yds and with RWS hobbies i think 12grn takes bunnies at 45-50yds one shot kill not too heavy to lug about for a few hours and short enough to be shot from inside the car (Discovery) all in all a brill little gun some may disagree and they are entitled to their opinion but for me and many others BRILL one thing i would also recommend is a one piece mount being quit lite for a springer they do dance a little even when tuned but as with most springers let it do its thing don't try to tame it and it will deliver the goods every time (almost ) it can out shoot me thats for certain and at a reasonable price even new but then this is only my opinion best bet is find someone near you who dosnt mind you having a few shots best of luck Andy :look: Edited October 15, 2009 by slingshot

huntercarbine
just remember mate not all permissions are cleared for fac, or suitable for example barn shooting. i'd get a secondhand xl, you see loads for sale, then spend the big bucks on a fac. best of both worlds. good luck. njc110381
I'm the opposite. I think spend the money on a better air rifle and buy a cheap .22! You can get some fine shooting .22s for £100 or so. I found my Lightning hard to shoot well, couldn't get a good group. It's too light and jumpy IMO. Have you considered a PCP? My Air Arms S200 would hit a 5p every time at 30 yards. I could reguarly hit the ember off of a cigarette and get the pellet clean through the middle of an M8 washer at 25! alexr
If you go for a PCP don't forget to factor in the cost of the filling kit  Could be as much as another £250  or as little as £ 150

Power ranger
 Great rifles the XL, but some people do struggle with grouping ! You have to learn to shoot a springer ilke the XL. Holding the rifle correctly, squeezing the triger slowly and controlled (dont snatch it), breathing, follow through with the shot and lots and lots of practice will give mega results with the XL  PCP's are much more acurate due to no recoil but as mentioned charging gear is at a cost I have a air cylinder and pump to the tune of 300 quid :( could have 2 springers for that money My dad had a XL for some time and could group in a 5p easily at 30 yards it just takes practice  The BSA XL is a top class quality uk springer that can out shoot its equivelants and can cost half the price ! 10 out of 10 for XL
smiiithy
I've got a .22 XL Tactical - cracking gun. I'm getting it tuned by Steve Pope and V-mach and a V-mach spring fitted instead of a gas ram. £125 for the tune, but from I've read it's well spent. huntercarbine
Any views on the Umarex 850 AirMagnum yes mate, being a co2 gun the power reduces in cold weather, and if you fire in quick succession. The bolt can stick, and certain pellets wont fit in the magazine, too long. Louder than a pcp. I would rather have a lightning xl or hw95k than one of these, by a long way. If you can handle a heavy gun, have a look at the tx200, i had one and it is the best spring powered gun available. You should be able to get a pcp and stirrup pump for the price of an 850 airmagnum. George1990
TX200 is sweet. I have the older MkII version, which I think is better than the MkIII. It is heavy, but shoots good and has a lovely trigger from new. The Mk2 has more bear-trap engagements, which reduces the chance of the lever flicking back up. It also fires more smoothly (this is the case between my Mk2 and my dad's Mk3 anyway). Can pick up a 2nd hand one at a good price too. I got a bargain - as new gun (fires less than 250 pellets), scope, slip and pellets for £150!
Edward
My mate has a TX200hc mk2, very heavy but incredible to shoot with for 15 quid more than a Xl tactical I can actually get a ruger 10/22, might go for that
aaron airgunner
in my opinion keep the stingray, there good guns. lightings fall apart to easily and kick.
