hindhunter
Hi All, Looking for all your opinions on what is the best make and model of quad bike out there. I am guessing its the Honda, but what does everyone else think.
soreshoulder
Ive got a Can am 400 (Canadian make, not jap ****) it is really well made, and makes the hondas seem like they have a hamster in a wheel for the engine

soreshoulder
I have been there and done it, my friend has a foreman 450, and he tried to pull a very heavy trailer up a hill (concrete), with no lockable diff, he was sat there spinning 3 wheels with one of them still. I had a go and the visco-lock (front differential system) really works and it pulled me straight up. In fact he was in front of me and kept slowing down and having to make me stop and then take off again on a steep incline, just to try and make me fail, however the Can am pulled it all up! I trust you have never had a Can am or driven one? I have driven Honda's (foremans and Trx's) and also grizzly's (600 - 700 and Kodiaks) and i know which I like best. Seriously Edward and Hindhunter, if you get chance to test one or have a go you will get why they say '' The ride says it all''
shot shot
Firstly, you get what you pay for, but you pay for what you get all this "mine is better than yours" stuff is nonsense, every manufacturer has been continually improving their models for the past decade. Any prejudice about quads 14 years old has no real world application on quads, say, 5 or less years old. I used to have a subscription to a magazine called "dirt wheels", an american mag that specialises in quads. I'd recommend you get a couple of copies if you muct know about the best of the best. p.s. stay away from the chinese ****
Edward
the only experiance I have had with can am was a renegade 500 which was nuts Sorry I didnt mean to start a 'mines better than yours' argument lets go out on a different and back on topic tangent, hindhunter have you thought about a utv such as a kubota rtv or yamaha rhino

Conygree
according to the keeper I work with, it's Honda but they are pricey, I have a used Suzuki Eiger 4x4 400 05 for £2.8k last year. I find it a really good bike and I mean bike as I throw it about like one as I use it for quadogging in birds on a shoot, often every day for 10-20 miles off road (last Saturday I must have done 40 miles - good job I get free petrol). It's light too handle, gearbox a bit heavy at times. For me being out of my own pocket it's about right as I'm not using it for heavy work as some of the shoot quads have harder work to do ( I have seen a King quad carry 6 men on a shoot day - driver, 3 on the back and one either side). But saying that if the keepers Honda quad is faulty he askes to borrow mine for feeding against using a heavy diesel Artic Cat Quad. As he said on his last shoot he could almost have x2 Suzuki Eiger against an upmarket Honda. Also in general only go for shaft drive quads, and check out the spares situation or it's back to a mountain bike?

nelly
I would recommend a Yamaha Kodiak too, they are excellent all-rounders and have very few hang ups in my opinion!
mr lee
Ive got a Can am 400 (Canadian make, not jap ****) it is really well made, and makes the hondas seem like they have a hamster in a wheel for the engine I had rode a can am and have to say, they are powerful machines and just seem to keep on going. We mainly use the two honda foremans on the farm and whilst they keep on running they do seem to go through a few parts each year. Mainly bearings and seals. I have also used a Kawasaki 750 I think it was, and whilst it had plenty of top end it just seemed to lack in torque when towing anything. It blew up twice in 6 months and was only a year old. Never been on a suzuki so can't comment on those or yamaha ones. We use quads when setting out some of our enduro events so they get a decent offroad test in all conditions. Money aside though and looking at something that has a load of grunt for when you need it I would have to say the can am gets my vote with a honda very close behind. njc110381
The only quad I've used to any extent was a Kodiak. It pulled a heavy trailer full of wood up some serious banks in a wet paddock and never missed a beat. I'm not sure if it's the best you can get, but it was bloody good! njc110381
With a couple of good blokes it's not hard to manhandle a quad onto a trailer to pull it out. Last time I tried to move an argo I had to winch it onto the trailer! I didn't mean I could actually carry a quad

Last time I tried to move an argo I had to winch it onto the trailer! I didn't mean I could actually carry a quad It would depend entirely on where either machine broke down. AND if you had a couple of good blokes to hand, not always possible if you go to Scotland stalking, as I do I had the kawasaki quad before I HAD to buy an Argo as the quad just would not get around in the forest, very wet land and steep, and to be honest I would not like to negotiate rough terrain on a quad with a sizeable red deer draped across it, My argo has the same Kawasaki v twin engine as some quads. I find meticulous maintenance takes away a great deal of breakdown worries
