Good day on the pigeons

Was shooting today on maze stubble that had been combined as apposed to silaged. Not all been cut yet and the pigeons have been getting on it for a few weeks already, got to the field around 9ish there must have been 300+ in the spot we had planned to shoot. My mate had been watching the fields and last year had around 1000 off the combined maze over a month so really new the best spots. We set up and put out 2 magnets and 3 flappers and about 5 full bodied decoys, not in any particular pattern as we have found they come in better if you just put everything in a clump! My mate was suspicious as to where all the birds where as we hadn't seen anything like what was there a week ago..he went for a drive only to find the farmer had cut another 50 acres and he said there must have been around 1000 on it..We should have moved for a big bag and more shooting but we were happy with the steady flow and we couldn't split as we only brought one set of gear so we stuck it out!

We shot until about 1.00 they came in steadily throughout the morning... with the odd showers putting up big flocks and sending them are way...good to see so many birds about as on my permissions (rape and wheat barley etc) we never see numbers like i did today! We were under a major flight line and the rain helped stir things up and occasionally big flocks of hundreds flew over head which we reckon must have been spooked from the other field. But all in all a good day...with some very sporting birds of all varieties and of course some sitters around the deeks!

We finished with 75 pigeon and 1 crow!

Looking forward to next week for another go!

(took the photo before we scanned the fields and hedges to find more birds)

Well done mate. Saw Jon in Sainsbury's yesterday and he said you might both be going out.

Good bag lads and I was in sainsbury's in chippenham on tuesday. I had to attend a course in the Angel Hotel. I didn't realise you lived there. Could have arranged an eye-ball. Next time maybe.
