rimfire4969
After my last shoot on Saturday my dog was wet through and extremely muddy, i use a towel in the truck and dry her off as best i can. I have seem at a couple of shoots the dog owners put their dogs in a dog fleece jacket, seemed a bit silly to me at the time, but i am thinking know that i should give her the best after working all day for me. What do you do with your wet and muddy dog after a days shoot? Jacket, towel or just their bed in the back of the car.
KennyB
with my two blokes i put them in the duck pond to get all the mud off, then let them run around to get the excess water off tkem, Then they are given a good toweling down in the back of the car and home, then given another rub down dinner and they sleep like logs for the rest of the night kenny
Al Downie
If I'm putting the wet dog (cocker) back in the car but I won't be driving off straight away, I normally don't bother towelling him down but I do put a fleecy thing on which I got at one of the shows this summer: Equafleece coat thing It's fast to put on and take off, and the dog heats up and dries quickly in it. If I didn't put that on he'd start shivering almost immediately because there's hardly any fat on him. And I bought a black one for my black dog, because all the others look totally gay. rimfire4969
And I bought a black one for my black dog, because all the others look totally gay I got a liver and white springer, i guess it may well look abit gay, do they do pink
henry d
My, small, springer gets a fleece lined jacket with a T towel under to absorb wetness and mud at lunch and after the shoot, the older dog was much bigger and only needed a neoprene for wildfowling. Don`t underestimate how much body heat a small dog can lose compared to a bigger dog, mine suffered an epileptic fit due to being cold and having low blood sugar. jasper3
One thing ive noticed is that working cockers dont have a downey under coat like most other gundog breeds, so they seem to get colder quicker ..we always give our boy a good toweling after a swimming session, our springer seems to dry off quicker and he doesn't run around as much.. we have been looking at those toweling cover bags...i think it may be a good purchase..... jasp
rimfire4969
Equafleece on lunchtime and after shoot. Think its time for me to spend some more money Don't tell the wife :(
Al Downie
I think it's money well spent. I also meant to say that my dog really likes it - he gets all excited when I reach into the box in the back of the car and pull it out - then he cranes his neck forwards with his eyes closed, waiting for me to put it on! WGD
then he cranes his neck forwards with his eyes closed, waiting for me to put it on! Al Downie
Sorry Al, coudn't resist Not bad. I should get one of the bright red ones in Great Dane size, then wear my underpants outside of my trousers...
Popgun
After a hard days work I allways put a towling coat on my Cocker because he rides home in a open backed landrover and it takes about 1/2 hour to get home, when he's working he's hot then cools down rapidly, once home he gets a rub down has his dinner gets in his bed in the corner of the front room and sleeps and dreams of phesants and starts yaping in his sleep which he never do'es when he's working, they work very hard so it's only fair to give them a bit of comfort. MC
My, small, springer gets a fleece lined jacket with a T towel under to absorb wetness and mud at lunch and after the shoot, the older dog was much bigger and only needed a neoprene for wildfowling.Don`t underestimate how much body heat a small dog can lose compared to a bigger dog, mine suffered an epileptic fit due to being cold and having low blood sugar. My Springer didn't have a fit but he did collapse for the same reason. He now has a neoprene coat for when we go 'fowling and when beating I always have biscuits or a mars bar with me and he gets a piece every now and again. His cage in the back of my car has plenty of dry blankets in it that I get from a charity shop. The wool type are excellent for dryiing him off quickly. al4x
I would guess its the same thing MC and HD's wasn't due to the dog having epilepsy as epileptic fits aren't related to cold and low sugars more neurological problems, collapsing after working hard is pretty common in working springers sadly keep them topped up food wise to keep their sugar levels up seems to be the only way to prevent it. My GWP gets towelled down or allowed to go into the straw stack and roll in loose straw there which she loves, though to be fair she so far has never bothered about the cold and wet think it may be the fact i got her from Wales that she's used to it
plinker
if you have a pickup with a truckman or a dog crate on it you can chuck 1/4 of a bale of straw in there on shoot days , its perfect for lunch time and the drive home as there is no heater in the back like a conventional car or 4x4.dogs seem to really take to it. i had a fleece jumper thing for a prevoius dog when she got old it really was good, i got it from an advert in the shooting press can,t remember what is was called, she used to wear it all the time when she was out, i buried her in it when she died. UKPoacher
Horses, greyhounds and athletes all wrap up after exercise so why not gun dogs? It makes me wonder how many working lives have been shortened by throwing wet dogs into cold vehicles while their owners yarn away after a shoot? mez75
My dogs get dried off with a towel then put in an equafleece after working, the dog crate has lots of fleece blankets in it also. I also take pork pies for them to snack on (lunchtime/after shoot) to keep the energy levels up. do they do pink Unfortunately they do, my other half is obsessed with pink & couldn't wait to get a pink fleece for our little bitch
