mikky
can you use non expanding ammo in the hmr 17 on vermin ( ie out in the field for rabbits ) reason i am asking is that my fac is up for renewal and i need my permission re signing by the farmer,i have rung him and there is'nt a problem,he has agreed to renew my permission but we just can't get together at the same time.........so....if i can't get the signature in time will they take the expanding ammo off my new ticket. i am quite happy to shoot the rabbits with my shotty and target shoot with the hmr 17 with fmj mikky
casts_by_fly
do you have access to HMR rounds with FMJ's? I haven't seen them in this country yet and I know they are rare even in the US. Thanks, Rick
MC
Do you have to renew your permision? Doesn't it just keep running? My ticket isn't restricted to any particular land it just says any land I have lawful permission to shoot over that has been cleared by the chief of police for that area. al4x
there is a box to fill in stating where you intend to use it though MC, Herts just let you put the farm name etc and the farmers phone number and they just call to check. However if you go for the HMR for targets only odds are you'll be restricted to ranges and not have the authority to vermin shoot on land you have permission on
MC
God I hope my FEO never retires as you lot all seem to get the rough end of the ****ty stick. I just tell my FEO I want it for vermin control and tell him a few places I shoot and that is it. No letters or phone numbers although he knows the places I shoot and the owners anyway. I suppose shooting at the same rifle club as my FEO has some advantages. It is that old saying " It ain't what you know, it;s who you know"

MC
I still fill in an application form, I have never been asked for permission forms etc, he just writes vermin control on the form. He does have the standard form with the farmers name etc on it but they have never contacted him.
al4x
ah I don't do permission forms either though I think they only contacted the farmer on initial grant and then when i went for centrefire to check the land hadn't changed from their previous land check. casts_by_fly
Never even seen FMJ 17hmr rounds ! CCI made them at one time when the HMR was fairly new (around 2005 they made them) and they might make some now. I haven't checked recently and I can't check from work. However, I've only seen them in the US and they aren't common at that, even in places with a lot of stock on display like cabelas and Gander Mountain. Billy.
I thought it was illegal to shoot animals with FMJs?! Hence the Section 5 exemption.

HW682
I have no idea whether they are actually in stock, but my local gunshop has these listed........17 hmr FMJ HW682
Billy.
You will struggle to find .17 HMR FMJ. Anyway, Mikky, don't shoot animals with FMJs. It's inhumane and the bullet will cause very little damage to the animal, potentially leaving it with permanent injuries or causing it to have a slow and painful death. We do not need another reason for antis to kick off: This is something that can easily be avoided.
Andy H
CCI still make 17 fmj http://www.cci-ammunition.com/products/det...amp;loadNo=0055
Mike2
The .17HMR is lethal on metal indoor backstops in target shooting clubs. It's quite suprising how much of a crater it leaves - and I know most target shooting clubs using metal backstops have now banned it's use on them. mikky
thanks for the replies...i had no intention of using fmj on animals.the farmer was'nt sure if he was going to renew my permission,if he did.nt then i would not be able to buy expanding ammo...no land ....no need for expanding.. ..........just got a phone to go up to the farm....he has decided to renew . apparently he allowed someone to go the land and they left gates open, empty shell cases on the floor and empty beer cans he knows it was'nt me so everything back to normal mikky
