Glensman
Hi Lads, I'm shopping for a .270 and I was thinkin of ordering a Sako 85. Has anyone any opinion on these or is there be a better rifle I should be considering? I will be using this Mainly for fox but I will also take the odd goat and deer. I had considered a Sauer 202 Classic. But I'd like a modern rifle with a traditional look and feel. All advice is Very welcome
steve_b_wales
I use the 75 model ( 22-250 ) and it's brilliant. The 85 has improved on that. so it's got to be good.
Glensman
I was thinkin about a 75 and then I said to myself the 85 has to be a better rifle so I should treat myself. But there are bound to be a few good rifles in that price bracket...
Rem223
I have both a Sako 75 and an 85. There isn't much between them. The 85 has a different recoil lug setup and an improved magazine latch but that's about all. I haven't seen a Sauer up close but a friend recently purchased one and is now moaning that it looks like a BSA. The wood on it looks really nice though. The Sako's I have looked at don't have much in the way of grain pattern. Compared to other rifles like Remington, Winchester etc. the metalwork is much better finished on the Sako and the actions match the cartridge. If I was in the market for another rifle it would most likely be another Sako or if money was no object a Cooper! monkeymagic1969
Have you had a look at Blaser R93 - similar action to the Sauer (Straight Pull) But then againyou wont get a much better out of the box shooter than a Sako!!! I have owned 2 Sako 75's and they are bloody brilliant
docholiday
I have an 85, cant fault it, shot well from the box and no complaints Doc
cleaner4hire
you cant really go wrong with any of the sako models old or new
Gully
I've got an 85. I've never read a bad word about them or the Tikkas so checked them both out. Decided that if I bought a Tikka I'd always feel I should have bought the Sako, so I bit the bullet and coughed up. I've not got much to compare it against as its my first rifle and I've only put about 20 rounds through it but it groups within 3/4" straight from the box. Shot my first deer with it last week. Dunkield
Have you had a look at Blaser R93 - similar action to the Sauer (Straight Pull) The Sauer 202 is a bolt action is it not? From what I have seen of them they are top rifles, very accurate too, there are a few fans on here who will steer you towards them.
monkeymagic1969
Sorry yes they are bolt action, but are switch barrel like the blaser
Glensman
Well I went in and got a quote on the 85... It think I can stretch to the money if I put my Leupold on until I can afford another schmidt Anyway, the one I'm looking at it the Hunter Laminated Stainless in .270. The fella in the shop says these come with a 20" barrel but I thought I read somewhere it was 22" 7/16... Does anyone happen to know? 20" seems to be Very short for a .270 :o
PAULT
ive a sako 85 in 243 with a 20 in barrell and i havent had any problems ask the roe in scotland
Glensman
I'm sure there's nothin wrong with a 20" barrel- Sako wouldn't make it if it wasnt accurate enough- but it seems fierce short to me... I'd rather a 22" myself.

Not to stir up an argument but my feeling is that shorter barrel are no less accurate than longer barrels and if anything with a skinny barrel it is more likely to be more accurate. However you will lose some velocity.
Glensman
Yeah 20" barrel was pre-threaded- which is something that I want although I dont necessarily intend to always use a Mod, I was gonna try it for a while without one to see how I get on. I would rather sacrifice portability that velocity to be honest...
oldspot
I have a Sako 85 .270WSM which is a great rifle, very fast and flat over longer ranges.

Glensman
Well I got on to someone else and as far as I can see my dealer is wrong and it is a 22 and 7/16 barrel... I would rather have the extra couple of inches and then run a slightly cold load. To answer WGD I was quoted 1315 at 15% VAT for a laminate stainless which is the one I think I'm goin for. Hopefully a second hand one appears to save me a few pound!
