catweasel
today me and 2 other mates had a wander round some new permission just to have a look see whats moving about, not much really in the way of rabbits but mixy just been through a couple of month ago, anyway we shot 2 clean rabbits 2 woodcock and a woody, so not bad considering we have got loads of snow, but there were a load of crow flighting well so going for a chat with farmer to see if i can have a go decoying a few, fingers crossed for that one. thanx
Luckyshot
Not a bad result on the vermin for this weather, but I wouldn't of shot 2 woodcock on a Sunday (at least not if I was shooting in the north east England)
catweasel
why would you not of shot the woodcock for m8 as i am just wondering ?
al4x
Interesting one this are they classed as game or wildfowl? seem to be down as waders wherever I look but no doubt someone will know. I've only shot them during game days so its not mattered though in theory were they wildfowl I guess non toxic shot should be used.
henry c
There classed as game, and therefore non toxic shot is not required. Its also unlawfull to shoot game on a Sunday!
Troosers Too
Yup, they're game, so illegal to shoot on a Sunday. Personally, I wouldn't want to be shooting a Woodcock with the weather as cold as it has been for so long. These are real wild birds, not some pampered & well fed pheasants. Go on, give them a break - they can't be very great eating now anyway! TT
dolphin
hi all just been on the basc website if woodcock are game why would they be on list for the wildfowling ban starting tomorrow dolphin
Dr D
they are game and illegal to shoot on a Sunday. So it appears someone has just admitted to breaking the law! oh dear...
Tam
hi all just been on the basc website if woodcock are game why would they be on list for the wildfowling ban starting tomorrow dolphin Woodcock & Snipe are classed as Wildfowl - hence covered by the Wildfowling ban - as are reared Ducks
catweasel
well this is a bit of akward discussion but i think that dolphin is right as he has checked on the basc website, and they have said they are wildfowl, and i would say that they would know. dolphin
hi catweasel i hope i am right cos i think theres been enough said already on the subject dolphin
catweasel
i know what you mean, the birds would not of been shot if they were game, and the birds were shot by my mate who wanted them because he lloves the taste of the birds, not for me thanx, anyway thanx for your input it is very much appreciated, all the best for 2010, and good shooting to you Edited January 4, 2010 by catweasel
MC
Woodcock, snipe and Golden plovers are all classed as waders and therefore CAN be shot on a sunday, you CAN use lead shot as they are not ducks or geese (Unless over an SSSI etc) and YES they do come under the wildfowl ban. al4x
Cheers for that MC as ever its very unclear whats what. Interesting they are included in the ban under the wildfowl banner but not for the lead shot ban
MC
No Worries, That was the answer from BASC last season when I asked them, we quite often see them flighting across my flight pond but had never shot them as we always shoot the pond on a sunday and neither of us were sure about the legalities. I still haven't shot any as the ******* pond is frozen solid. Anybody want a ton of wheat?
al4x
tragic isn't it the pond on my local estate was deadly quiet this morning as that had frozen and the birds cleared off to the river, the pheasants were also wandering like they do at the start of the season and I'm guessing it was probably on the look out for water as there is plenty of feed about. MC
Tragic isn't the word, There wasn't a drop of water in the pond until the first week in december, we started to feed it. Shot 3 mallard and now it is frozen solid. Sod's law being what it is it will just either thaw out just before they put a ban on shooting ducks or the end of january will be upon us. MC
They are game... No they are not, They are WADERS
Luckyshot
If you check on BASC website they are classed as Waders but if you go by the BASC leaflets which I have done they are classed as Game according to the title. I may be wrong as I dont shoot Game or Waterfowl if so then I appologise but this is a confusing species as BASC state they are both Waders and Game. Although this is the open seasons leaflet it clearly classes them as Game along with the rest of the waterfowl. The Deer bit is missing as I only scanned half of the leaflet. MC
That doesn't class them as anything, it lists the seasons end of story.

al4x
Interesting seems no one knows the answer to this one, as we only shoot them on game days I'll stick to not shooting them on sunday but well worth remembering if you have a beaters day on the 1st of february as I've seen people get a rollocking for that in the past
